Description

No. 118,677. I Patented Sep. 5, H171;
:i v (I! Witnesses "I ventor:
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
ALBERT FREDERICK BENTEN, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND FARRELL JEROME OREILLEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN BED-LOUNGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,677, dated September 5, 1871; antedated August 11, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT FREDERICK BEN- TEN, of San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented an Improved Extension Bed-Lounge; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to that class of lounges or sofas which, when unfolded or extended, form double beds; and consists of certain improvements in the details of construction, whereby a more neat, substantial, and convenient article of furniture is produced than heretofore, without the application of my invention.
' I11 the annexed drawing, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the frame-work and machinery of a lounge and bed embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan of same.
Like letters refer to like parts in each of the figures.
A is the back, B, are the legs, C is the fixed part of the seat, and D represents an inclined head-piece of a sofa or lounge. The under lower corner of the inclined head-piece D is hinged to the fixed seat 0, and adjusted to any desired angle of inclination by means of the screw-bolt E and the holes F passing through the backA. C is the movable part of the seat, that folds over onto C when the article is used as a sofa, and is unfolded or extended when used as a bed. To
the movable seat 0 is hinged a head-piece, D,
in a nearly horizontal position or in any position in which the leg G would not answer the pmposc. When not in use, H and Iare disposed of as shown in the drawing; but when in use, the leg G is turned on its pin until the slot L is over the hole M, and then the screw I is driven into the hole M, securing the leg H on the outside of G. By means of the slot in H the head-piece D can be caused to assume any desired angle. The setscrews and slotted leg E, I, and H maybe fitted into recesses in the back of A, so as not to project and prevent placing it close against the wall. WVhen C is extended or unfolded its outer side is supported by legs J, hinged at K in such a manner as to fold up out of the way when not wanted. The movable head-piece D is also supported in a similar manner by G.
Hinging the adjustable head-piece D to the movable seat C, instead of to D, is a novel and peculiar feature of my invention, and is preferable as being more simple, and allowing of adjustment of the angle of inclination, independent of D, by means of the rod G. By this construction the face of the folding-seat C and head-piece D can be upholstered in a continuous manner from end to end, and present a neat and uniform appearance.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The hinged head-piece D, in combination with the fixed seat 0 and back, when made adjustable by means of the setscrew E, as described.
2. The combination of the folding head-piece D, having the swinging leg G, with the hinged head-piece D having the slotted leg H, as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
Witnesses A. F. BENTEN.
C. W. M. SMITH, H. S. TIBBEY.
