Letters Patent No.. 96,356, dated November 2, 1869.

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To whom tt may concern:

Be it known that LGERARD SICKELS, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Folding Bedstead',

of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective drawing of the folding bedstead, embodying my invention.

Figure 2 is a bottom View of the folded bedstead, looking up from below the same.

Figure 3 is an end view of the same.

Figure 4 are details.

The object of my invention is to produce a bedstead which can be folded up, and firmly held in 'that position, without removing any parts therefrom, and which, by two sim ple movements, can be made readyagain for use. lhus a bedstead can be put up, and be stored away -wit-hont taking it in pieces, and be always coinplete and ready; and

My invention consists ina bedstead which can befolding into a compact form, and held together by the use of -the devices hereinafter described.

D D', to which is hinged the bed-bottom, consisting of the two rails E E and the cross-slats F F' F", Sto; the rails E E being each formed of two pieces, of equal lengths, hinged together, respectively, and to the cross-pieces D D in sucha manner as to be doubled up upward, by moving the head and foot-boards toward one another.

The operation of raising the bed-bottom is facilitated by the brackets G, which, together with brackets G', support the rails E E when extended.

To the under side of the cross-pieces l) are attached, with one end, the bars h h', the other end of which is provided with a grooved head, which fits on cams 'i yi',

attached to cross-piece D in such a manner that when the bedstead is being folded, and the bars h h' are pushed outwardly, they will tighten on cams Ii t", and thus hold the bedsteadA securely folded; and when moved inwardly, they will relax their grasp, and thuis` allow the bedstead to be drawn out.

Having thus fully described my inventhin,

The head and bot-boards A B, folding rails G C', and upwardly-folding bed-bottom, in combination with hars h h', brackets G G', and cam-blocks t fi', iu the manner and for the purpose substantially as described.
