Letters Patent No. 94,656, dated Sqitember 7, 1869.
nurnovnn SOFA-IBEDS'IEAD.
The Schedule referred to in these Lette'n Patent and making part of the same To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ADAMSGHWAA of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Sofa-Bedstead; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exactdescription thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, refereneebeing had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this speciiication The object of this invention is to provide a simple and cheap construction of sofas-for adaptation; to be used also as bedsteads.
The invention consists of an arrangement, whereby the upholstered part of the back may be swung for ward out of the frame on hinged arms, and arranged alongside and in the same horizontal plane with the seat, to form a bed, as hereinafter. specified.
Figure 1 represents a front elevation of my im-. proved sofa-bedstead, and
Figure 2 represents a transverse sectional elevation of the same. I
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Instead of permanently connecting the upholstered part A of the back to the frame B, I provide a sepa rate frame or back, 0, for the same, and joint it at the ends to arms D, journalled to the frame at L, or connected. to a transverse shaft, E, journalled at the said point. I also provide upon the back 0, near the edge I, which is thelowest when folded up, and the outer mostwhen turned down, to be usedas a. bed, the folding legs G, which are arranged as representedin red, when used as a bed, and which may be held in the folded-up condition against the back by loops, or any other devices. g
The posts H of the frame Bare recessed, as shown at I, for the reception of the arms D, when folded up i in the position shown in fig. 1. The aims are shouldered at K, to rest on the hack-railrL, to'support t-he back when used as a sofa, and the upper edge of the said back rests against the front of the top-rail of the frame B, as shown at M. When turned down, as showrrin red, the inner edge of the back is supported by the pivots N, by which the ends are conneeted to the arms D, and the said arms are supported by resting on the front rail 0 of the frame of the seat.
Head and foot-boards, P, may be secured at each end by dowel-pins, one atthe front entering a hole in the part 0', and another at the rear taking into a transverse bar, Q, or by any other suitable or preferred arrangement.
' A drawer, B, may be attached to the under side of the seat, to slide in and out, for storing the head and foot-boards, also the bed-clothes, when used as a sofa.
Having thus described'my invention,- 1 claim as new, and desire to Patent- 1.- The sofa-back A, fitted to the frame B, and
jointed up'on arms D, arranged for folding it into the i said frame or down in front of the seat, and relatively thereto, substantially as specified. E
4 2. The arrangement, with the arms D, of the shaft E and back-rail L, substantially asspecitied. 3. The arrangement, with the back A, of the hinged' legs G and the arms D, when the said arms rest on the rail 0,.to support the inner part-of the bottom, all A substantially as specified.
