Description

T. S. THRSN.
Folding Bedsteads. No( 134,111. Patented. De.17,1s72.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THEODOR S. THORSON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT lN FOLDING-BEDSTEADS.
Toall whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1,'1HEoDoR S. THORsoN, of Chicago, in the county of (look and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful `Improvement in Folding-Bedsteads, of which vdrawn upward, the sides of the bedstead will be folded lclosely together, as the whole is hereinafter fully described and shown.
.In the drawing, Figure lis a top or plan view of my improvement in folding-bedsteads 5 Fig. 2, a top or plan view of the same when folded together; Fig. 3, a sectional elevation taken on line a; x, Fig. 1.
A A represent the side rails of an ordinary bedstead, fastened to the posts Bin the usual manner; and O C represent a two-part headboard and foot-board, hinged together at their central parts F F, and also at their edges G to posts B B, so that they will swing inward, as shown in Fig. 2. The slats J J are madein two parts each, and hinged to the rails A A at I l, and hinged together at H at the point of contact midway of' their length, as shown more clearly in Fig. 3, so as to swing upward, as shown in Fig. 2.
The means for folding the device .consists of a cord or strap, K, which is fastened to theslats J by means of suitable cap-plates L, and to the under edges of the boards O (l by any suitable. means, as, for instance, staples or hooks. This arrangement is such that when the cord or strap K is drawn upward by the hand the head and foot boards C O will be drawn inward and the slats J drawn upward, bringing the rails A A closely against them, as shown in Fig. 2. The bedstead is held in form by means of an ordinary bottom, or any bottom which is long enough to bear on the cleat-s D D, fastened to boards O O, and also bear against the head-boards.
The advantage of a folding-beds'tead, for the convenience of shipment and moving from room to room without being taken apart, is too obvious for explanation, and more especially/so when the bedstead can be folded by simply drawing upwardly 011 the cord or strap K.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. The combination of thefolding head and' foot board with the folding slats J and cleats D, as for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the folding head and foot boards (l C, folding slats J, cleats D, and cord or strap K, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
THEODOR S. THORSON.
