Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
J. R. BENNETT AND P. W. BIRCH, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 49,701, dated September 5, 1865.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that we, J osEPH R. BENNE'IT and PETER BIRCK, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Combined Table and Bedstead; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forining a part of this specication, in which- Figure 1, Sheet No. 1, is an end view of our invention adjusted as a table; Fig. 2, a trans. verse vertical section of the same, taken in the line :o x, Fig. 3; Fig. 3, a longitudinal vertical section of the same, taken in the line y y, Fig. 2; Fig. 4, Sheet No. 2, a side sectional view ofthe invention adjusted as a bedstead, taken in the line z z, Fig. 5; Fig. 5, a plan or top view of the saine.
Similar` letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention consists in a new and useful combination of a bedstead and a table, whereby the device may with the greatest facility be adjusted so as to serve'as a table or a bedstead, and answer as well in either capacity as if made separately for each.
A represents the legs of the table, the upper ends of which are connected by bars B,framed into the legs, and having their upper edges ilush with the upper surfaces of thelegs. These bars B forni the end pieces of the table-fra1ne, and their upper surfaces, as well as the upper surfaces of the legs, have a dovetail groove, a, made in them. (Shown clearly in Fig. 3.) The legs A are connected by side bars, C, which complete the table-frame.
D D represent the parts which compose the top of the table, and are secured near their ends to end pieces, E E, the" lower edges of which are provided with dovetail projections b to t into the grooves a in the upper surfaces of the bars B. The end pieces,E E, are connected by bars F on pendants c, and the outer edges of D D have leaves Gr secured to them by hinges (l.
To the lower ends of the pendants c there are attached, by hin ges e, horizontal slotted frames H, which work on cleatsf, attached to the inner surfaces of the bars B. These frames H are allowed to slide one over the other when the two parts D D are shoved toward each other, and the inner ends ofthe side pieces of p the slotted frames are cut beveling, so as to lap over each other when the parts D are distended, and admit of being secured in position by a button, g. (See Fig. 4.)
The slotted frames H form the bed-bottom, and when drawn outward to their fullest eX- tent the parts D D are turned down to avertical position andare supported by the leaves G, as shown in Fig. 4.
The device thus adjusted forms a bedstead, as shown in Figs. et and 5, and to convert it into a table the parts D D areturued upward to a horizontal position, the dovetail projections B of the end pieces, E E, being fitted in the dovetail grooves a, and said end pieces and top parts, D, coming in contact and secured by a hook and staple, l, or any suitable fastening. The dovetail projection and grooves b a prevent the end pieces, E, from rising from the bars B.
The mattress J, when the device is used as a table, may be folded and kept in the space underneath the top parts, D D. The frames H are provided with stops a* to prevent them be ing withdrawn beyond a suitable distance.
le claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The slotted frames l H, table-top composed of the two parts D D, connected by end pieces, E E, which are provided with dovetail projections b, to work in dovetail grooves a in the upper edges of the bars B of the table-frame, substantially as herein shown and described.
JOSEPH R. BENNETT. PETER YV. BIRCK.
