Joss-PH serres, or' NEWYORK, N. Y.
I Letters Patent No. 72,562, dated .Deoember 24, 1867; antedated December 11, 1867.
turnover FOLDING TABLE.'
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH SUTTER, of the city and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use, a certain new and useful Improvement in Folding Tables; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact ,description of the said invention, reference being had to 'the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, wherein- Figure 1 is a section of my table as unfolded for use.
Figure 2 is a similar view as folded to occupy but little space.
Figure 3 is a rear view of the table as folded.
Figure 4 is a section of a modication of said table in a folded position, and
Figure 5 is a similar view of the same table in an open or unfolded position.
Similar marks of reference denote the same parts.
My invention consists in a table with x-folding legs, one pair of which'are attached by hinges to the bed' ofthe table, and the other pair of legs are connected by pins entering slides on the under sideo'l -the table, so as to allow the legs to be folded andthe tableto hang against them at an inclination, or to be unfoldedor spread, and the table supported by them, the vlegs always remaining connected with the table, and the slide allowing of the motion of the pairs of legs at their upper `ends in folding and unfolding the table. v
In the drawing, a isvthe table-top, formed either round, square, or polygonal, and the sameis ornamented byva slabA of marble, b, let into a recess in the said table, and cementedin place. By this mode-of constructing the top of theI table a surrounding or herder of wood is visible around the marble. This adds to the beauty ofthe table, and enables me to employ marble where it could not be used in the ordinary manner, because this table is made to fold, and it is necessary that the slab of. marble be firmly secured to the ltable-bed; and by having the same introduced ina recess in the wood the marble will be strengthened, and can be madeA quite thin.A On the under side of the bed a are hinges c, uniting the pair of legs 0l that is formed of. two legs, connected by cross-pieces 1, and either plain or ornamental, in the formation of the legs. e e are the legs of the other pair, connected to each othergby the cross-pieces 2 2, and united at the central portion to form anx with the legs cl. ff'are slides attached to the under side of the tablea, grooved on their faces towards each other, and receiving pins or blocks projecting from the sides of' the legs e e, near their upper ends. These legs e e, hence, are connected to the table at theirnpper ends, but when the legs are folded the table can be turned downintoan inclined position. The legs of the table may he curved, so as to forin a sufficient base for theA table, to stand firmly, when folded, as seen in figs. 2 and 3, or the table may bel supported, when folded, by
`the auxiliary legs g, that are hinged to the legs e at 8, and thrown out into the position shown iniig. 4,-when the legs oZ and e are folded by the links h that extend from the legs d to the auxiliary legs g.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v Atablc in -which the bottoms of the X-folding legs are suiiciently spread to support the table when folded, and the upper ends of said legs are connected to the bed of the table in the manner specified. v
I lalso claim a folding table with the marble top cemented into a recess in the wooden bed, as and for the purposes specified.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my signature, this thirteenth day of A pril, 1867.
JOSEPH SUTTER.
