Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHAS. LAMMRICH. OF NEW' YORK, N. Y.
FOLDING TABLE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 22,294, dated December 14, 1858.
To all whom fit may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES LAMMRroH, of the city and State of New York, have 1nvented, made, and applied to use certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Tables; and I do hereby declare 'that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, wherein- Figure l, is an end view of the table as spread or distended for use. Fig. 2, is a side view of the same as partially closed. Fig. 3, is an inverted plan of the table as open. Fig. et, is a back view and Fig. 5, a side view of the table as folded together for storage or transportation.
Similar marks of reference denote the same parts.
Tables have heretofore been made with the top hinged onto the legs for the purpose of compactness when not in use or for convenience in transportation.
The nature of my said invention consists in combining with the hinged top folding legs fitted in such a manner that the table when distended or opened for use shall be very firm and rigid, and when folded together for transportation or otherwise, occupies very little space, the legs shutting together and folding down closely against the table.
In the drawing a, a, are the legs connected together by the cross bars f, f, and jointed rails I), c, and g is the column or center piece on which the legs will turn together or be spread apart, and a, a, are folding or toggle bars jointed to the cross pieces f, 7, so as to keep the legs spread when opened. The rail b, is hinged onto the cross piece (l, which is attached to the bed piece c, by the center screw l.
7L is the table top.
e', 7e, are the leaves of the table, and where these leaves are used I provide sliding brackets or supports 0, o, which pass through mortises in the bed piece e, and in the surrounding bed Z.
rPhe manner of using my invention will be apparent from the drawing. To open the table from the folded position Figs. et and 5, iirst unhook m, from the eye on the piece d, turn the bed h, into a horizontal position and spread the legs; in this operation the cross piece (Z, turns on the center screw l, and moves with the legs and rail while the other pair of legs and rail c, turn on the column g as a center. The joints a, eX- tend themselves, and when moved slightly past the center, the backs of the hinges coming together hold the legs firmly apart and against the surrounding bed l. The leaves may then be opened if required. In shutting up, the reverse movements take place.
It will be apparent that the. shape and manner of constructing the folding legs may be varied according to the use required and the more or less ornamental character of the table; and the shape of the bed of the table may be round or square or other form, and bc provided with leaves or not.
lhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The folding legs (a, te) combined with and hinged onto the bed or top of the table in substantially the manner and for the purposes specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto setI my signature this twenty-fourth day of November, 1858.
CHARLES LAIWIMRICH.
