To ZZ volto/m i may] concern Be it known that I, ALBERT VANiNnn, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county ot' New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding-Leaf Tables, ot' which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tables of the class capable of being converted either to the round or the square term, and particularly to that class otj folding leal tables ol this general kind in which leaves 'folding flatwise under the center part of the table are employed.
h/Iy principal objects are to produce a table el the kind particularly indicated above. which shall be strong and durable, especially as to the 'trame thereof and also as to the leaves when extended, which may be cons verted to either the round or square torm with 't'acility and convenience, and which shall be so coi'istructed as to insure against its leaves being accidentally moved outl ol the 'folded or extended position.

The frame of the table shown comprises substantially vertical legs, in the present instance four in number, a corresponding number of horizontal rails connecting the several legs together, each pair of legs being connected by a rail, together with means to be described for securing the legs and rails together. Each two adjoining rails o are arranged with their end portions crossing each other. Each rail preferably presents a materially greater vertical than horizontal dimension, and the crossing end portions ot' each two adjoining rails are formed the one with an upper and the other with a lower recess a', after the manner of halving, into which the rails are respectively fitted, as best shown in Fig. 4. The tabletop includes a center part f/ which is polygonal in torm, in the present. instance being rectangular, and the segmental leaves Iz, each being attached to the side ot the center part hy the hinges vf in such manner that it may stand in the same plane with and thus Atorm an extension ot the center part or be folded tlatwise under the same.
At correspoluliug points on the several rails there are secured the hinges y' a tl'ording vertical pivots tor the lealE supporting arms 1. which may be swung to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3. in which position each arm will supportthe correspond ing leat' extended. or to the tull line position in said figure. in which position said arm is adapted to support said leal folded, or lying substantially [lat against the under side ot the center part ot the table, the arm -tor this purpose being provided in 'its outer vtaee with an elongated recess Z whose lower side t'orms a ledge to receive the edge ot the leal". In the Vt'olded position the arms are backed by the plate springs m which are attached to the rails c and serve to hold the arms intel-locked with the leaves.
To limit the outward swing of each arm I provide on the under side oli the corresponding lent a stop n, and to prevent the arm from being accidentally pushed back when supporting the leal I further provide the spring-pin o arranged in each arm and adapted to enter a recess p in the leaf when the arm is against the stop. To swing the arm inwardly, it is therefore necessary to 50 release the pin 0 Y the under side of the down on the spring-pin 0 until it clears the recess p. Spring-pin 0 and stop n cooperate, when the stop' is engaged by the arm, to hold the latter against movement in either direction. n order to prevent the hinges e' from being strained by attempts te litt the table by means of its extended leaves each stop n isformed witha laterally projecting lug g entering a recess r in the arm 7c when the latter abuts the stop and binding the parts closely against each other. Each arm 7c bears outwardly of its pivot against center part of the table when extended and when the correspending leaf is interlocked therewith by the means Q-'-f1" the leafis held labsolutely rigid or immovable either upwardly or downwardly. y

The table top is secured on the trame, resting flat on Vthe flush surfaces of its legs and rails, by any desired means and in such manner that `the rails are parallel wit-h the sides ofv the center part of the table top. It will beobserved that the form of the frame is such that it lends itself to the center part of the tabletop being secured thereto in such manner that the said center part will beheld by thc frame flat against the same in all parts thereof and so prevent it from warppull the under side of the cenf ing.
The peculiar arrangement of the legs and rails obviously 'forms a frame that it not only exceedingly strong and durable,. but, while it provides for the legs being set well at one side, the rails a aresuthciently inward from the'sides of the center part to allow the leaves to swing into the folded position' without interference with the rails. .ln order to swing each leaf fol ded to the extended position it is a Ysimple operation to press inwardly on'the a-rin k until it clears the leaf. Having thus fully described my invention., what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent isz l 1. In a table, the combination of a frame including several lspaced legs, horizontal rails each formed of one piece of material of uniform horizontal thickness, said rails having their ends crossed and halved into each other and each leg being secured in the outer angle of a crossing kof two rails Vand havingv innerV surfaces thereof bearing against the outer surfaces of said two rails, and a circular top secured .on the yframe and caf.
2. A table frame including several spaced legs, horizontal rails joining the legs, each two adjoining rails having their ends crossed and halved into each other and each leg being arranged in the outer angle of a crossing of two rails, securing means extendingthrough the end of each rail into the cor-respending` leg, and a securing device extending through the crossing portions of each two rails and into` theA corresponding leg in bisecting relation to the vangle of the crossing.
