DETACHABLE IRONING BOARD CLOTHES RECEPTACLES Filed March 24, 1952 FLORA E. CADDEL United States Patent DETACHABLE ERGNING BOARD CLOTHES RECEPTACLES Flora E. Caddel, Kelso, Wash.
Application March 24, 1952, Serial No. 278,273
2 Claims. (Ci. 38111) My invention relates to providing means for holding articles from the floor during the process of being ironed on an ordinary ironing board.
One object of my invention is to provide means adapted to retain in position adjacent to the ironing board and prevent from contacting the floor any large article which is being ironed on an ordinary ironing board by a hand fiat iron.
Anon er object of my invention is to provide means of the character described which may be swung over into close contact with the ironirx board so as to occupy a minimum of space when not in use or may be readily removed from the ironing board, when the same is not in use for ironing purposes.
Still another object of my invention is to provide means of the character described which will be practical, convenient and at a minimum of cost.
Referring to the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a top view of an ironing board with my clothes retaining receptacles attached.
Fig. 2 is an end view of an ironing board with a portion of the legs and brace wires broken away showing my improved clothes retaining receptacles in their extended position.
Fig. 3 is a detailed view of a typical hinged hanger, attaching bracket and locking device.
Referring further to the drawings:
Standard ironing board panel 10 is supported, when in use, by the standard tripod type legs 11 and brace wires 12.
On one side of the ironing board is a clothes retaining receptacle 13 of wire net construction. The top or rim wire 13a which forms the upper edge of the netted wrie receptacle provides the portion of said receptacle by which the same is attached to the ironing board 10. On the other side of the ironing board 1%) is a smaller clothes retaining receptacle 14 or like netted wire construction. The top wire 14a provides the upper edge of the last mentioned netted wire clothes retaining receptacle and provides the means by which the same is attached to the ironing board 10.
Each of these receptacles is hingeably and detachably mounted to the ironing board by means of a pair of hangers 15, 15 having elongated tongue portions 16, adapted to slide into metal attaching brackets 17 which are fastened to the under side of ironing board 10 with screws 18.
Each of the attaching brackets 17 has an elongated tongue-like projection 19 which is engaged by a locking device 29. These locking devices 20 are mounted on perpendicular wire elements 21 which are also the end Wires of substantially U-shaped form attached to the rim wire and are a part of the netted wire constructed clothes retaining receptacles by coiled portions 29a of the locking device 20.
In the narrow type of ironing board the width of the clothes retaining receptacle 13 is such as to cover the whole top of the ironing board when not in use for ironing purposes. The small receptacle 14 swings over on the top "ice of the ironing board in the arc of the dashed line at the left of the ironing board and the lar er receptacle 13 swings over the entire width of the ironing board it) and over the clothes receptacle 1-; as shown by dotted line. in an ironing board or" greater width the receptacles 13 and 14 are of just sufficient width so that when they are swung over into position for storage they follow the respective arcs shown in Pig. 2 by dashed lines, thereby bringing the sides of the receptacles adjacent to each other on the top of the ironing board. in either arrangement the large receptacle 13 is provided with a latch device, not shown in the drawings, which holds the recepetacles together when folded for storage.
Each of the clothes retaining receptacles 13 and 14 locks in position, when the ironing board is in use for ironing purposes by means of a locking device 2% pivotally mounted at each end of the receptacle on the wire member 21 by means of the coiled portions 29a, 29a of the locking member 211. This locking member Zil is adapted to engage the tongue portion 19 of its respective attaching bracket 17.
The clothes retaining receptacles 13 and 14 may be entirely removed from the ironing board by swinging each locking member 26 from its engagement with the tongue 19 of its complementary attaching bracket 17, whereupon the tongue portion 16 of the hanger 15 may be withdrawn from the attaching bracket 17.
Having thus described my invention 1 claim:
1. in a clothes retaining receptacle of netted wire construction, in conjunction with an ironing board: a rim wire forming the upper part of the framework of the netted wire constructed receptacle; a U-shaped end wire portion of the netted wire receptacle perpendicular to and each end of which is attached to the rim wire forming the upper part of the netted wire receptacle; a pair of hangers, pivotally mounted on the rim wire; an elongated tongue portion as an integral part of each hanger; an ironing board; attaching brackets on the under side of the ironing board, complementary to the pivotally mounted hangers and through which the elongated tongue portion of the hangers extend; an elongated tongue portion as an integral part of each attaching bracket; a locking device engaging with the elongated tongue portion of its respective complementary attaching bracket, said locking device being pivotally mounted on a U-shaped wire forming a part of the netted wire constructed clothes receptacle.
2. In a clothes retaining receptacle: a frame of netted wire construction, having a rim wire forming the upper edge of the said netted wire constructed receptacle; a pair of hangers pivotally mounted on the rim wire; an elongated tongue extension portion as an integral part of each hanger; a complementary attaching bracket for each respective hanger, receiving the elongated tongue portion of its respective complementary hanger; an elongated tongue portion as an integral part of each attaching bracket; and, a locking member, complementary to each attaching bracket, engaging with the elongated tongue portion of the bracket; such receiving and engaging of elongated tongues being effected when the retaining receptacle is in operating position.
