GEORGE C. THOMAS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN TABLE-LEAF SUPPORTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,769, dated May 13, 1873 application filed April 12, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE C. THOMAS, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Table-Leaf Support 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescription thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same,`reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming pa-rt of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of my said invention, and Fig. 2 is a top view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in both figures of the drawing.
My invention relates to that class of supports designed more especially for supporting the folding leaf of a sewing-machine, but may be used for other similar purposes; and the improvement consists in constructing' the same in two parts, one of which is so arranged as to admit of being permanently attached to the lower surface of thel bed ofthe machine-table, and the other hin ged tothe said perm anentpart in such a manner as to fold under the bed when closed, and when opened to extend under the leaf, thereby supporting the same in a horizontal position.
In the drawing, A represents the permanent part of the bracket, the upper or horizontal portion of which is provided with a series of apertures, a, through which the screws are passed for attaching the same to the bed of the machine. The verticalportion of the said part A extends downward a distance suffi cient to give the requisite width of bearing for the hinge, and is provided with a brace, B, which extends upward to the opposite end of the horizontal part as shown in Fig. 1. Al is the movablev part of the bracket, which is hingedA to the part A in such a manner as to fold under the bed, as shown by dotted lines, Fig. 2, thereby allowing the leaf to be dropped when not in use, A vertical shaft, C, is permanently attached within the upper and lower portion of the movable part A', as shown in Fig. l. y'Ihis shaft passes loosely throughlugs d d formed upon the stationary part A, thereby connecting the parts A and A together in such a manner as to allow the part A a free and easy movement.
It will be observed that the hinged portion of the respective parts A and Al extends down below the bed, the object being to give the requisite strength vto support the leaf.
I claim- An improved table-leaf support formed by combining the parts A A and shaft C, constructed and arranged substantially as described.
. The above specication of my invention signed by me this 23d day of July, 1872.
