To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MARY E. IRVING, citizen of the United States, residing at Algiers, New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Combined Tables and Work-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a combined work box and table and has for its object the provision of a comparatively simple and thoroughly eflicient device of this character, capable of being readily attached to the frame of a sewing machine, and which serves the dual function of a work supporting table and receptacle for unfinished work. Q

A further object is to provide a sewing machine attachment including a swinging frame having a work receptacle pivotally mounted thereon and adapted when in operative position to form a table or support for the work and when in inoperative position, to take the place of the usual side drawers of a machine.

A further object is to provide a sewing machine attachment, the construction of which is such that the same may be readily moved to operative and inoperative positions and compactly folded so as to occupy very little space when not in use.

A still further object of the invention is generally to improve this class of devices, so as to increase their utility, durability and efficiency.

Further objects and advantages will appear in the following description, it being understood that various changes in form, proportions and minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims.

For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof, reference is to be had to-the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure l is a perspective view of a combined work box and table constructed in accordance with my invention, showing the same swung laterally on the frame of a sewing machine to operative position; Fig. 2 is a detail side elevation of a portion of the machine, showing the device in inoperative position; Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical sectional view of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view, showing the box or receptacle in horizontal position with the lid thereof closed; Fig. 5 is a detail vertical sectional view, showing the manner of supporting the frame of a sewing machine.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.

The improved device forming the subject matter of the present invention is principally designed for attachment to sewing machines and by way of illustration is shown in connection with a sewing machine of the ordinary construction, in which 5 designates the supporting frame, 6 the table or top, and 7 the machine proper.

The device comprises a swinging frame including spaced side rods or bars 8 having their upper and lower ends recessed at 9 for the reception of transverse connecting bars 10 and 11. Secured to the supporting frame of the machine, are attaching members 12, each preferably formed of a single piece of sheet metal having its intermediate portion bent to produce a sleeve 13 adapted to receive the adjacent rod 8 so as to permit the frame to swing laterally thereon. The ends of the attaching members 12 are provided with transversely alined' openings for the reception of suitable clamping nuts 14 by means of which said members may be rigidly secured in position on the frame of the machine.

Secured in any suitable manner on one of the rods 8, are collars 15 having race-ways formed therein for the reception of antifriction balls 16, which latter bear against the sleeves 13 and serve to reduce friction between the parts. If desired however, the collars 15 may be dispensed with without departing from the spirit of the invention.

The upper connecting bar 10 is provided with spaced openings 17 adapted to receive a loop or bail 18. The loop or bail 18 is preferably formed of a single piece of wire having one end thereof bent upwardly to produce a transverse bar 19 adapted to bear against one face of the adjacent bar 10, while its side members are bent inwardly and pivotally connected at 21 with a work box or receptacle, indicated at 22. The box or receptacle 22 is preferably substantially rectangular in shape, as shown, and provided with a pivoted lid or cover 23 adapted when moved to open position to form an auxiliary table or support for the Work, there being a brace 24 pivotally'mounted on one side of the receptacle 22 and adapted when swung outwardly, to bear against and form a support forthe lid 23, asbest shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings.

The outer or free end of the box 22 is connected with the lower connecting bar 11 of the swinging frame by means of spaced inclined braces,- each preferably formed in two sections 25 and 26 having their abutting ends pivotally connected at 27 and their outer ends pivotally connected with the bottom of the work receptacle 22 and upper edge of the connecting bar 11, respectively, thereby to form a support for the work receptacle and maintain the latter in a hOI'lzontal position at the front of the machine.

One side of the box or receptacle 22 is preferably carved, painted or otherwise ornamented, as indicated at 28, so that when the work box 1s moved to inoperative position parallel with one side of the machine, said work box will present the appearance of the usual side drawers of a sewing machine. The lower ends of the side rods 8 are preferably provided with casters or rollers 29 adapted to bear against the floor and thus facilitate moving the work box to operative and inoperative positions. Thus it will be seen that by swinging the work box or receptacle laterally in the direction of the front of the machine and then'grasping the lower end of said receptacle and elevating the same, the sections 25 and 26 of the braces will bear against each other and thus form a rigid support for said receptacle. With the box in the position shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the latter forms a convenient receptacle for work, and the lid or cover 23 may be closed and the box or receptacle used as a supporting table.

When the device is not in use, an inward pressure is exerted on the brace sections 25 and 26 at the pivotal junction thereof which permits the box or receptacle to move downwardly against the swinging frame, when the latter together with the receptacle, may be swung rearwardly to a position parallel with one side of the supporting frame, and in which position, the ornamented face of the work box will be presented at the front of the machine so as to correspond with the usual set of side drawers.

It will here be noted that the bar 19 is ofiset with respect to the side members of the bail 18 so that when the work box or receptacle 22 is swung upwardly to operative position, the bar 19 will bear against the adj acent face of the upper connecting bar 10 and thus assist in supporting the box in a horizontal plane. It will also be noted that on the initial downward movement of the work receptacle or box 22, the latter will swing from the pivot pin 21, a further downward movement of the work box, causing the bar 19 of the bail to be disengaged from the ad jacent connecting bar of the swinging frame so as to allow said bail to assume the position shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. By forming the bail in this manner, the work box or receptacle may be swung upwardly or downwardly on said bail without danger of the pivoted end of the box bearing against the adjacent edge of the table. It will also be noted that the constructionof the device is such that the box 22 forms a convenient receptacle for unfinished work so that the operator may always :have the work within easy reach. 7

The device is extremely simple in construction and may be readily attached to the supporting frame of all well known types of sewing. machines without in any manner altering or otherwise changing the construction thereof.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is; i

1. The combination with a sewing machine including a stationary frame and table, of a swinging frame operatively connected with and movable in a horizontal plane on the stationary frame of the machine, attaching members secured to the stationary frame of the machine and forming bearings for the swinging frame, a work receptacle, an elongated bail having one end thereof bent upwardly and extended through openings in the swinging frame for contact with the inner face of said swinging frame and its other end pivotally connected with the bottom of the work receptacle near the inner end thereof, and a sectional brace forming a pivotal connection between the bottom of the work receptacle near the outer end thereof and the lower end of the swingingframe, said receptacle being movable with said swinging frame to a'horizontal' position at the front of the table of the sewing machine and to a vertical position substantially parallel with one end of said machine.
