NITED STATES PATENT OEEIOE.
LOUIS H. STELLMANN, OF BRATTLEBOROUGH, VERMONT.
IMPROVEMENT IN CRADLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,141, dated November 24, 1874; application led August 25, 1874.
To all 'whom it may concern Be it known that I, LoUIs H. STELLMANN, of Brattleborough, in the county of Windham and State of Vermont, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Cradles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawing is a representation of a perspective view of my cradle. Fig. 2 is a perspective View, and Fig. 3 is an end View, folded.
This invention has relation to rocking-cradle supports of the folding kind, and the nature ofthe invention consists in a hinged joint in the horizontal end bars of a folding support for the said cradle, which bars are also pivoted to the adjacent ends of the said support, whereby the said supports will be allowed to fold closely, the one within the other, by the iiexing ofthe said bars, thereby securing a permanent union of the said supports, and dispensing with the detachable bar in common use, while a perfect folding of the parts is obtained, as will be hereinafter more fully explained.
In the annexed drawings, A designates one part, and A another part, of a support, resembling' in all essential points the standards of any ordinary cotbedstead, pivoted together at or near the middle of the vertical arms a by the brace-rod b. B designates the horizontal end bars connecting the upper eX- tremities of the adjacent ends of the standards. These bars are constructed in two parts, z' j, connected together by means of a hinge, e, applied to the lower surfaces thereof. They are also pivoted to theupper ends of the arms a, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
By this construct-ion of the bars B, when the pivoted standards are folded, the one upon the other, they will also be exed, one portion thereof' upon the other, allowing both to assume a compact form, the one in line with the other.
With a view to relieving the hinge of strain, I have rigidly secured upon the upper surface of the end bar B a block, b', which breaks the joints thereof, and limits the function of 'the said hinge to holding the two parts in union.
C designates a cradle, consisting of a frame, c, preferably of rectangular forni, to which a suitably-ornamented hammock is removably secured, as shown in Fig. l.
This cradleframe is mounted upon the end bars B by means of journals having their bearings upon the blocks b', and may be rocked for the purpose of putting a child to sleep, or when not in use may be tilted into a vertical position and placed along with its supports in an upright position against the wall, out of the way.
E designates a detachable canopy, consist-- ing of a shading part, d, and two bows, e e, which is applied by means of rounded ends upon the said bows, and perforations in the cradle-frame at or near the head of the cradle, for the purpose of shielding the face of a sleeping infant from a glaring light, or for the purpose of allowing a net to be spread over the occupant without the person being touched by it.
It being sometimes necessary to prevent the bed-frame from tilting over, I have made use of pins p, inserted in perforations in a section of each of the end bars B, on opposite sides, which pins, when thurst intok the said perforations, will pass under the end bars of the cradle-frame c, and will hold it in a iixed position.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a cradle, the combination of the horizontal end bars B, hinged at their center, and the folding supports A A', the former pivoted to the adjacent ends of the supports, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth. A
2. A folding cradle, consisting of the pivoted supports A A', the hinged horizontal end bars B, rocking-cradle frame c, journaled to the end bars, and the detachable canopy E, substantially as described. v
In testimonyr that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
LOUIS HEINRIOK STELLMANN.
