Description

L L BAER.
Folding-Chairs.
Patented March 17,1874.
INVENTOR\ UNITED STATES PATENT FFIGE.
JOHN J. BAER, OF COLUMBIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN FOLDING CHAIRS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 148,648, dated March 17, 1874; application filed February 13, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J. BAER, of Columbia, in the county of Lancaster and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Chairs; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
My present invention is intended as an improvement upon the folding chair for which Letters Patent have been granted to me February 17, 187 4; and it consists inthe arrangement of the cross-braces, the seat, and the armrests, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved folding chair, showing the same spread out ready for use; and Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, showing it partially folded.
A A represent the sectional legs, jointed together by means of the plates B B, in the same manner as described in my former patent above referred to. G .0 represent the side piecesv of the back, pivoted to the rear legs, and having the arm-rests D D hinged to their front sides at a suitable height. The front ends of the arm-rests D D are pivoted to the upper ends of arms or bars E E, secured to the front legs. The seat H is attached to side pieces I I, each of which is made in two sections, joined together by means of two pivoted metal plates, a a, and the sections hinged to the upper ends of the legs A A. J J repre sent the cross-braces, of which there are two pairsone pair in front, and one in back--the lower ends of said braces being hinged to the inner sides of the legs, a suitable distance above their lower ends. Their upper ends are hinged to the inner sides of the seat side pieces I I, close to the joints thereof, so that each side piece of the seat is supported in four places-by the legs at the ends, and by the braces near the center. K K represent the rockers, which are pivoted to the lower ends of the front legs, and attached to the lower ends of the rear legs by means of flanges or plates 1) b, so that they can be easily attached and detached at will, making an ordinary armchair or a rocking-chair, as desired.
This chair can be folded up in a very small compass, when not in use, or for shipment.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with the legs A A, of the jointed side bars I I, pivoted plates at a, seat- H, and cross-braces J J, all as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination of the sectional jointed legs A A with bars E E, pivoted back 0 O, pivoted and hinged arm-rests D D, jointed side bars I I, and rockers K K, all constructed substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 26th day of January, 1874.
JOHN J. BAER.
