gttumg UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN FOLDING-CHAIRS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,195, dated April 2, 1872.
Specification describing anew and Improved Folding-Chair, invented by HENRY JAMES, of North Adams, in the county of Berkshire and State of Massachusetts.
Figure l is a detail vertical longitudinal section of my improved folding-chair. Fig. 2 is a detail vertical section of the same taken through the line 00 as, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The invention is an improvement in foldingchairs; and it consists in the construction and V combination of various parts of the chair, as
hereinafter more fully described.
A are the legs or main frame. B is the seatframe. 0 is the back. D are the legs that support the back when turned down to form a bed. E are the jointed arms. F are the pawls that support the arms and back. G is the front or extension frame, which is provided with the foot-rest H, about the construction of all which parts there is nothing new. To the forward part of the front frame G are pivoted bars I, which may be made in one piece or jointed, as shown in Fig. 1. When the bars I are made jointed the joints should be made with stops, as shown in Fig. 1, so as to hold the said bars rigid when extended. Upon the under side of the free ends of the bars I are formed notches to catch upon the front crossbar of the legs or frame A, so as to support the front or extension frame G securely at any desired elevation. I prefer to make the bars I jointed, as shown in Fig. 1, as it enables them to be folded upon the frame Gr, when it is desired to turn said frame Gr back upon the seat B to adjust the chair as an easy chair. The bars I are connected by a round to keep them in proper relative position and to cause them to move together when being adjusted. The pawls F are connected by one or more rounds or rods, J, to cause them to move together, so that they may be both opera-ted together from one side of the chair to engage or disengage them from the notches of the forward parts of the jointed arms E.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination in a folding-chair, with extension frame G, provided with pivoted and notched bars I, of frame A, seat B, and connected. pawls F J F, as and for the purpose described.
HENRY JAMES.
