ASAHEL O. BOYD, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO E. W.
VAILL, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT m FOLDING CHAIRS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,124, dated April 22, 1873; application filed April 14, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ASAHEL (J. BOYD, of Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Folding Chair; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
In the drawing, Figure l is a transverse section of a chair embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same.
0 D represent, respectively, the front legs and arms, formed in one piece, A, out of wood or other suitablematerial, and reverselycurved,
as shown. B are the back legs, and E the back proper, of the chair. The front and back legs are connected together by means of links a, which fit over around I) in front, and are connected in rear to the back legs by screws. The front legs are connected together by rounds b c, and the back legs by round d and seat-piece e. i F is a flexible seat, which is attached in the usual manner to the seat-pieces e f. The back E is pivoted at bottom to the back legs.
When the chair is unfolded in condition for use the back legs rest upon the upper round of the front legs, whereby the weight of the occupant of the chair is distributed between the flexible seat and a rigid portion of the front legs; at the same time all liability to the flexible seat being unduly stretched by the spreading apart of the front and back legs is prevented by the links a.
This construction is simple, consists of few parts, is strong, and at the same time admits of being folded into a small space, thus making a chair that is both durable and capable of transportation at a small expense.
I claim as my invention- 1. The reversely-curved pieces A, forming the front legs and arms 0 1), respectively, in combination with the back E, back legs B, and folding seat F, substantially as described.
2. The side pieces A, provided with a round, b, that subserves the double purpose of a connecting-pivot for one end of the links a and a rest for the upper ends of the back legs, in combination with the links a, seat F, back legs B, and back E, substantially as described.
ASAHEL O. BOYD.
