GEORGE CHANDLER, OF CHELSEA, MASSACHUSETTS.
KNOCKDOWN RATTAN CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 301,338, dated July 1, 1884.
' Application filed September 15, 1883. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE CHANDLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chelsea, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knockdown Rattan Chairs; and I do hereby declare that the same are fully described in the following specification, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in knockdown rattan chairs; and it is carried out as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, where- Figure 1 represents a side elevation, and Fig. 2 represents a front elevation, of my improved rattan chair. Fig. 3 represents a horizontal section 011 the line A 13, shown in Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 represents a cross-section on the line 0 D, shown in Fig. 3. Figs. 5, 6, 7 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, and 14 represent views of the several parts of the chair detached from each other as they would appear when constructed to be put together as hereinafter described.
Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occur on the different parts of the drawings.
The object of this invention is to so construct a rattan chair that it can be taken apart, so as to occupy but comparatively little space when shipped or transported, for which purpose the back is made separate from the seat and arms. The front legs and front brace are made as one single piece detachable from the seat and side braces, the latter being detachable from the front and back legs and the seat; and, finally, the stretchers which unite the legs are made detachable from the latter.
In the drawings the invention is shown as applied to a rocking-chair; but it is equally well adapted for other kinds of chairs, as well as for settees and sofas.
In the drawings, a represents the seat of a rattan chair, as usual.
1) represents the detachable back having downwardly-projecting rods 1) I), adapted to be secured to the seat, and preferably continued downward as rear legs, I) b; or the lat ter may be made separate from the back, if so desired.
0 0 represent the detachable arms having rods 1/ b of the back I), as shown in Fig. 2.
When the back and arms of the chairs are made duplex, as shown in the drawings, I make an extra lapping joint between the back and arms, as shown at 0 c in Figs. 1 and 2,
and secure the back and arms together at such places by means of suitable screws.
d d are the front legs, with the front brace, (1, made in one single piece detachable from the seat a and the rockers 0 e, if the latter are used.
f f are the side braces, which are each made in a separate piece detachable from the seat and the frontand rear legs, and adapted to be secured to said parts. by means of suitable screws or nails.
9 9 represent the stretchers, made in one single piece, that is detachable from the front and rear legs, and secured to the same by means of metal knees or brackets g g, permanently secured to the legs and detachable from the stretchers g g, or vice versa. The free ends of brackets g g are secured to the stretchers g y, when the chair is to be put together, by means of suitable screws or rivets or nails.
All of these detachable parts-that is, the back, the arms, front and rear legs and braces, side braces, and stretchers are each separately and completely wound with split rattan cane, so that they are ready to be put together by any ordinary mechanic at the place where the chair is to be used. In this manner the chair can be packed in a very small and compact package, and, as each of its component parts is separately and completely wound, itis only necessary to nail or screw them together in the manner described whenever the chair is re quired for show in stores or for actual use.
Rattan chairs parts of which are detachable have heretofore been made, and I lay no claim thereto, broadly; but
What I claim is The herein described knockdown rattan chair, consisting of the back and arms separable from each" other and lapping each other, as shown, at the joint between the said two parts, the seat separable from the arms, back, connected together by suitable means, substanand legs, the front legs provided with the tially as described. 1o
brace and separable from the other parts of In testimony whereof I have affixed my sigthe chair, and the side braces separable from nature in presence'of two witnesses.
each other and from the parts with which they r GEORGE CHANDLER. connect, such of said parts as are covered with Witnesses: rattan being separably and completely wound ALBAN ANDREN,
therewith, and the said separable parts being- HENRY OHADBOURN.
