Description
UNITED STATES PATENT UEEIGE.
GEORGEI MCALEER, OF `VVORCESLER, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVED FOLDING CHAIR.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 105.472, dated July 19, 1870.
` To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE MGALEEE, of the city of Worcester, in the county of Worcester and the State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Folding Chairs; and I do hereby declare that 'the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a side view of my improved chair unfolded for use, parts being broken away to show the construction. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same folded. Fig. 3 is a detail view, showing a modification of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved folding chair, simple in construci tion, strong, durable, not liable to get out of order, and which may be folded into a compact form for storagelor transportation; and it consists in the construction and combination.
ot' various parts of the chair, as hereinafter more fully described.
A are the short legs of the chair-frame,which are connected to each other near their lower ends by a round, B, and at their upper ends by a round,(l. D are the other or front legs, which are extended upward to forni the posts to support the back. The legs D are pvoted to the sides of the legs A by pivoting pins or bolts E, as shown in Figs. l and 2, so that the legs A may close up or be folded between the legs D, as shown in Fig. 2.
F is the panel or rigid back, which is placed between the legs or posts D, the same being firmly pivoted to the said posts by pivots G, attached to the back F, or formed upon the ends of the round or bar that forms the upper end of the said back.
To the sides of the lower end of the back F are pivoted the rear or upper ends of the bars or links H, the lower or forward ends of which are pivoted to the1short legs A a little below the points at which the said legs A are pivoted tothe legs D, as shown in Figs. l and 2.
The bars or links H are made with a curve The forward part of the seat J rests upon and i is pivoted to the round C, that connects the upper ends of the legs A, so that its rear end may be raised freely in folding the chair. The rear end of the seat J may, if desired, work in a slot in the back F.
To the sides ofthe forward end of the seat J are pivoted the lower ends of the arms K, blocks or washers, of about the thickness of the post-s D, being interposed between the said seat and the said arms. The upper parts of the arms K are pivoted to the posts D by bolts or pins, which are secured to said posts, and which pass through slots in the said arms, so that the arms K slide up along the posts l) when the chair is folded.
The seat J may be madeilexible, if desired, and the chair may be upholstered in any desired style.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. rlhe links or bars H, or their equivalent, in combination with the movable back F and pivoted legs A and D, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the round or barI with the bars or links H and pivoted seat J, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination of the legs A and D, movable back F, pivoted bars or links H, piv-` oted and sliding arms K, and seat J witheach other, whether the saidl seat be rigid or flexible, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
GEORGE MCALEER. lVitnesses THoMAs H. REED, J AMES H. DoHER'rY.
