Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH SUTTER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVED FOLDING BEDSTEAD.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 42,601, dated May 3, 1864.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH SU'ITEE, of the city and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use a certain new and uscfullmprovement in Folding Bedstead and Table Combined; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of my said invention, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specica-tion, wherein- Figure l is a plan, with the bedstead eX tended for use. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same, and Fig. 3 is a section of the bed stead with the table or desk as in position for use.
Similar marks of reference denote the sante parts.
Bedsteads have heretofore been made with jointed side rails to fold in and out as the head and foot guards are brought together.
The nature ot' my said invention consists, tirst, in placing such folding side rails at an inclination, so that a ledge can be formed for the reception of the bottom frame, and yet the width of the ledge shall not be greater than the thickness of the top of the folding side rail, in order that said side rails may fold together closely and into a less space :than would be required it' a separate ledge were applied to the side rail for receiving said bottom frame; second, in combining with the folding bedstead a table-top that is capable of being turned over the posts of the bed and sustained by them to form a table or desk.
In the drawings, a c are the posts of the headguard, and b b are the posts of the foot-guard. c c are the side rails, hinged together in suitable lengths, the hinges 1 l allowing the folding to be effected in one direction, while the hinges 2 2 work in the opposite direction. Thereby the folding operation will be the pressing toA gether ot' a zigzag; but when the bedstead is extended the side rails will be a straightline.
On reference to Fig. 2 it will be seen that they outsides of the side rails are at an inclination, while the inner faces are nearly vertical, thus allowing for the ledge 6, upon which the slats or bottom fra-mes, d d, rest when the bedstead is opened out. The hinges 3 3, by which the side rails are attached to the posts, are not exactly over each other 5 hence when the sides are folded they assume a slight inclination inward, as seen by the red lines, Fig. 2. Pins in the upper sides of the ledge 6 enter holes in d to steady the parts. The table or desk c is attached to the legs a c at their upper ends by loops f, passing through eyes 4, so that the table-top can occupy a vertical position behind the head-board, as in Fig. l, or be turned entirely over, so as to rest upon the tops of the legs a c b b, as seen in Fig. 3, and hinged leaves g g may be employed at the sides ot' the table c and be sustained by sliding bars in dovetail grooves, as represented at 5, Fig. 3.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, isl l. The folding side rails, c, set at an inclination and formed with the ledges 6 6, receiving the slats or folding bottom frame, d, as speci tied.
2. The table or desk top c, applied as specied,'in combination with the folding bedstead, as set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto'set my signature this 30th day ot'pMarch, A. D. 1864.
JOSEPH SUITER.
