Description

MMQMWW 9' 1 MFMNG who 14512 IPATENTED; FEB lana-68 gnitehtstes settent @ffireQ A. M. CULVER, or BEDFORD. OHIO.
Letters Patent No. 74,512, dated February 18, 1868.
IMPRVEMENT in LIPTINc-JAQK.
A T0 ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, A. M. CULVER, of Bedford, in the county of Cuyahoga, and State of 0hio,.have invented a. new 4and useful Lifting-Jack, it being an improvement of a lifting-jack for which a patent'was granted to me, February 19, 1867; and I do hereby declare that the fol-lowing is a full and complete description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a partof this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of the jack.
Figure 2, a view of the top.
Figure 3 is also a side view. Y
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the-several views.
A, fig. 1, a lever or handle, mounted upon the legs B, said legs being pivoted to the handle at the point x, thereby allowing them to swing freely so that they' can be spread apart or brought close together, as and for a purpose hereafter shown. C is alink or rod, one end of which is secured to the leg of the jack, whereas the other is made to extend up to the handle, and hooked into one of the notches C', whereby the jack is held in position while being in use. y
The practical operation of thisjack is as follows, viz.: The end, D, is placed' under the axle or other thing to be raised, the height of the jack being adjusted tothe height ofthe axle, by spreading out the legs or bring; ing them closer together, as the case may be. Now, on depressing the long arm of the lever, the shortarm will be correspondingly raised, thereby lifting up the weight, and which is held thusby the rod C, referred to, being slipped into one of the notches C. The position of the jack, when thus in use, is shown in iig. 1.
It will be obvious that this jack is easily and readily adjusted to any ordinary height of axle, bysimply spreading out the legs, or bringing them closer together, as thecas'e may be. It will also be observed that the legs are pivoted near to one side of vthe handleoi" lever, the purpose of which vis to aid in adjusting the jack to the varying heights of the axles, and which is done by reversing the relative position of the lever from that shown in fig. 3, -to .that shown in iig. 1, in which it will be seen that the width between the pivot and edge of the handle is reversed, thereby adding to the height of thejack, as shown in iig. 1, without changing the position of the legs, which are supposed to he alike in both 'figures'.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by LettersPatent, is-
The adjustable legs B, lever A, and rod C, constructed, combined, and arran ged to operate in the manner as and for the purpose set forth.
A. M. CULVER.
