PATENT OEEIoE.
WILLIAM MIDDLETON, OF NEWVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN LlFTlNG-JACKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 134,086, dated December 17, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM A. MIDDLE- TON, of Newville, in the county of Cumberland and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in LiftingJack; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification. The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a lifting-j ack, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which represents a perspective view of my lifting-jack.
A represents a standard, of any suitable dimensions, which may or may not be provided with a foot or support, as desired. At the upper eudof the standard A, on each edge or side, is a guide, a, and between said guides moves a slide, B, which is slotted longitudinally, as shown, and a screw or headed pin, 1), passing through said slot into the standard,
confines the slide to the same and allows the slide to move up and down only the length of said slot. The upper end of the slide B is made in step-form so asto accommodate the jack to wagons of difierent height. Below the slide B, on the side of the standard A, is pivoted an eccentric, D, provided with a handle or lever, G; This handle is arranged to project from the side of the eccentric opposite to that where the pivot is situated; but this is not essential, as the lever may project from any point desired, although I prefer to have it as shown.
The operation of the lifting-jack is readily seen. The slide B is moved upward by the eccentric D, and as soon as the eccentric is turned down the weight of the slide and the article supported by it causes the slide to move downward.
The parts of which my lifting-jack is composed may be made of metal, cast or otherwise, or of wood, or of metal and wood combined, as may be desired.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claimas new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the standard A with guides to a, slide B, and eccentricD with handle or lever G, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 16th day of November, 1872.
WILLIAM A. MIDDLETON.
