No. 130,542., I Patented Aug.13,1872.

UNITED STATES Q PATENT OFFIoE.
DAVID SHUMUSK, OF GASTI'LE, NEW YORK.
IMPRQVEMENT IN LlFTlNG-JACKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 39,542, dated August 13, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID SHUMUsK, of Castile, in'the county of Wyoming, and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lifting-Jack; and do hereby'declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had'to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of aliftingjack, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
" In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which represents a perspective view of my machine. I
.A represents a block of any suitable dimensions, through which passes vertically a screw, B, having at its lower end an arm, 0, extending through a vertical slot, a, in the block. 011 the upper end of this screw is screwed a toothed wheel, D, which gears with a wormscrew, E, having its bearings in cars 12 12 upon a metal band, Gr, surrounding the upper end of the block. One of these ears is slotted, as shown in the drawing, so that this end of the worm-screw can be thrown in and out of gear with the wheel D. It is held in gear by a pin, (I, inserted in the top ofthe block, and working in a groove on the worm-screw. Upon the end of the worm-screwis a crank, H, by means of which it is turned.
The arm 0 is placed under the article to be raised, and the crank H turned, when the screw B is raised by means of the worm-screw E and toothed wheel D. The screw may be lowered by turning the crank backward; or, when no weight is on the screw, by taking out the pin d, throwing the worm out of gear, and turning the wheel D by a crank, f, on the same. v
This machine may be used for a variety of purposes: hoisting or raising buildings or cars, in presses of various kinds, pulling stumps, moving buildings, &c.
Having -thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The slotted Wooden block A, having metal band G, with ears I) b, the angular bar 0, toothed wheel D, worm-screw shaft E with lever H, and the pin (1, all constructed substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 13th-day of May, 1872.
DAVID SHUMUSK.
