JOHN S. MERRILL, OF NEWTOWN, MARYLAND.
' I Letters Patent No. 72,314, dated December 17, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN WINDOW-SASH SUPBORTERS.
'ro ALL WHOM 1T MAY eoNoERN:
Be it known that I, JOHNS. MERRILL, of Newtown, Worcester county, State of Maryland, have invented new and useful Improvements in Window-Sashg and I do hereby declare the following to be an exact description thereof,` reference being had to `the accompanying drawings, and to theletters of reference marked thereon, making a part of thisspecification, in whichr Figure 1 represents the front view of window-frame, sash, and rollers.
Figure 2, a side view of the sash, metallic box, and loose roller.
The nature of my invention consists in the combination and construction of the inclined metallic box or plate, with a. loose metallic roller or metallic ball in the one side ofthe sash, and friction-rollers on the opposite side of the sash. v I l A represents the window-frame, B the window-sash, in the side of which is inserted an inclined metallic box or plate, C, to prevent the sash from being worn by the loose roller, D, the lower end'of the box` C being wide below and tapering tothe top, the metallic loose ball or roller D resting in the lower end of the metallic box C, so that the sash is easily raised; and whenever the sxish is to be raised to any particular height required, the
sash is pressed toward the right, and the loose roller D falls from the Anarrow end to the bottom of the metallic box C. By raising the sash slightly, and pressing the sash to the left, the loose roller D-is pressed against the window-frame A tightly, and holds the sash to the position required, by becoming wedged into the narrow part of the inclined metallic box C. Two friction' rollers, E E, are set into, and operated, and used in the opposite side of the sash, to allow the sash to he freely moved when being raised. y
I do not claim a self-acting roller or friction-rollers, as heretofore used with window-sash, but What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by LettersPatent, is
The use of the self-acting metallic roller D,'in combination with the inclined metallic box C,`in the one sidel of the sash, and two friction-rollers, EE, attached to the opposite side vof the sash, when arranged, combined, and operating with the sash, as hereindescribed and for the purposes set forth.
'JOHN S. MERRILL.
