Description
ilwrrs arssrr erica MARTIN V. B. WTHITE, OF TROY, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-SUPPORTERS.
To all 'whom it muy concern lle it known that l, M AnrrrN V. B. WHITE, of the city of Troy, count-y, of ltenssclaer,
Yand State ot New York, have invented a new and Improved Latch or (latch for Gar andI ot' the window A, showing the groove H in y which the window slides, also recess E and roller l), the plate G, throughwhich the arm C protrudes, and is made stationary7 to the window-frame A by means of screws, as more fully hereinafter described. Fig. 3 is a perspective view, showing my improved latch as it would appear when in its proper place in the frame of a window. Fig. 4 is a perspective ot the arm O and thumb'piece, l. Fig. 5 is a front elevation of a Window and window-frame,
showing the position of the thumb-piece I.
rlhe nature of my said invention and improvement consists in the employment of a handle or arm constructed oi' iron7 brass, or other suitable material, combined with a cylindrical-shaped roller, D, both of which lare set in asuitable recess in the side oi' a windowframe,o1ierating the window in the manner substantially as shown in the drawings and more Jfully hereinafter described.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention relates to make and use the same, l will here proceed to describe the construction and operation thereof, which is as follows, to wit:
A, Figs. l, 2, 3, and '5, shows the windowframe into'which my said improved catch is placed. A', Fig. a, shows a part oi' the window-frame A.
l5, Figs.- 1 and 5, is 'the window, which operates in the groove H ot' the window-frame A, and is operated by means ot' iny im proved catch, as hereinafter fully described. The
`said window and window-'rainc may be constructed of any material deemcdbest without interfering with the object ot' my said catch.
'1*1, Figs. 1, 2, and 3, is a recess in the said window-frame A. The said recess is lined with iron, brass, or other suitable material, and is triangular in shape. The said lining` to thc recess is made fast to the window-frame by means of the screws, as seen at Figs Zand 3.
ln the said recess E is placed the said cylindrical shaped roller D, which is made ot' any metal deemed best. In the center of said roller is a hole in which the said arm or han dle O is placed, as seen at Figs. l, 2, and 3. The said arm extends down and through the said plate Gr out of the said window-frame A. The said arm G runs in a groove in the said triangular recess, as shown by dotted lines at Fig. 2. The said plate G is made fast to the window-frame A with screws, as seen at Fi 2.
I, Figs. i, 3, 4, and 5, is the thumb-piece on the end of the arm C, by means of which the said catch is operated.
The said roller, arm, and lining to said recess E may be constructed` ot' any material deemed best,'but l generally preler malleable iron, as being the cheapest and the best adapt ed to that purpose. rlhe different pieces can be cast at very little `expense and easily fitted together by any common workman.
'.lhe operation of my said improved catch is as follows, to wit: When it is desired to raise the window the same is done by taking hohl of a suitable device constructed upon the said window and sliding the same up in the grooves H in the said window-frame A, the said roller D being pressed up in the upper part of said recess E, where it has plenty room without pressing against either the window or the side of the said recess E, therefore not interfering with the raising oi' the said window .B5 but as soon as the upward motion ol' the lsaid window is stopped, the said roller drops down and is closely wedged between the said window and the hypotenuse side ot' the triangular-shaped recess E. The more the window pressed down the more firmly it would be fastened, and it would be impossible to force it, down without breaking the windowframe A.
When it is desired to shut the window the saine is accomplished by pressing upward on the said thumb-piece I, thereby pressing the seid roller tothe upper part ofthe said recess, leaving' the seid window free to descend. No mattei' how hard the said window may be pressed down, before dropping,r it, by means ot' the seid thumb-piece, there will be no difficulty in pressing' np the'said thumb-piece land dropping' the said window, zisiztforesnid.
rlhe seid thumb piece l may be of any shape or size deemed best for the purpose it is intended.
When it is desired to use my seid invention and improvement in connection with store, dwelling', or other Windows, where itis desire.-
ble to have the window fastened down, as,
Well es when'it is raised, it may be done in the following' manner: By placing' my said improved catch both on the Window and on the wimlowfrznne. It will be readily seen that to mise the Window when arranged in this manner it will be necessary to lift the catch, which would be on the wi1'ido\v,ztnd that when raised :ts fair as desired it would be held in its place same is done by pushing the thumb-piece up on the catch in the window-frame, in the manlner snbsfantiftlly es hereinbefore described.
Having thus described my'saiid invention and improvement, what I claim, and desire to secure b v Letters Patent, is-
rllhe employment of the erm-piece or rod C, having the thumb-piece I thereon, and the opposite end thereof so constructed as to receive the roller D and'operaite the sanne Within the triznig'ular recess E, each being arranged sind combined in the manner substantiallyas herein described end set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 2d dey ot' June, A. D. 1865.
