SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 569,056, dated October 6, 1896.
Application filed April 25, 1896. Serial No. 589,018. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN WV. REGAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Door-Openers, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in door-openers adapted for use by firemen in forcing doors in case of fire, and it is carried out as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 represents a top plan view of the invention, and Fig. 2 represents a vertical section and partial elevation showing the device in position for forcing a door.
Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occur on the different parts of the drawings.
In the drawings, A represents the floor of a room or building, and B represents a door, as usual.
0 represents the door-knob or equivalent projection on said door.
The improved forcing device consists of a pronged pawl or block D, adapted to be temporarily driven into and secured to the floor A, as shown. To said pronged pawl is piv oted at cl the handspike or lever E, and on' such lever is adjustable the sliding block F, to which is pivoted the rod G, the upper end of which is pivoted to a pronged pawl or block H, adapted to be temporarily driven into and secured to the door 13, as shown.
In using the device for the purpose stated the pronged block H is preferably located below and in contact with the door-knob or projection C, as shown in Fig. 2.
The upper end of the lever E has a toothed or serrated surface e, adapted to engage with a preferably spring-pressed pawl f, as shown in the drawings, by means of which the sliding block F may be held and secured in any desired position on the lever E, as shown.
In using the device the upper pronged block H is driven into the door B, preferably below the door-knob or projection O,and the pronged block D is driven into the floor A, as shown. The sliding block .F is adjusted on the lever E to obtain the proper and desired leverage, and secured to said lever by means of the pawl f, after which the lever E is swung upward in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 2, thus causing the rod G and its attachments to force the door open in an emergency in case of fire or for other purposes where it is required to quickly force a door.
The invention is very simple, light, and portable, and is very useful for firemen whenever it is required to force a door open.
Having thus fully described the nature,
construction, and operation of my invention, I wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim- The described door-opener, comprising a lever E having a toothed portion 6, a block D pivoted to the lower end of said lever and having prongs to engage the floor, a rod G, a block F pivoted to one end of said rod and adjustable longitudinally on the lever E, a spring-pawl fon said block and adapted to engage the teeth, a block H pivoted to the other end of said rod and provided with prongs to engage the door, substantially as described.
