HENRY .IFHARDENBERGIL OF NEIV YORK, N. Y., AND GUSTAV VEIN- REICH, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA; SAID YEINREICH ASSIG-NOR TO SAID HARDNBERGH;
TRANsoM-LIFTER.
SPE(LIFIA'IION forming part of Letters Patent No.' 285,811, dated `Gctoloer 2, 1883.
` Application med June 1o, 1era. muriel.)
To all whom, t may concern,.-
Be it known that we, HENRY J. HARDE.vh linnen and GUsrAv Anno WEINREIGH, citizens of the United States, residing in the city,
county, and State of New York, and in the city and cbunty of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, respectively, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Transoni- Adjusters and we do hereby declare the`fol- 1o lowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the'invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. y y
The object of the invention is to produce a simple and efiicicnt device for adjusting transoms.
2o` Theinvention consists in the combination and Iarrangements of parts, substantially as will be hereinafter set forth, and finally embodied in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in
2 5 which similar letters of reference indicatelike parts in each of the several iigures, Figure l is a front elevation of a portion of a transom, partially broken away to show the arrangement ofthe adjuster therein. Fig. 2 is aplan 3o or face view of the adjuster, showing the arrangement of the parts thereof, the operating mechanism being adapted to lie, preferably, in a recess formed in the edge of the transom, and concealed from view bythe plate u. Fig.
3 5 3 is a section taken through line w.
In carrying out our invention we secure upon the bed-plate ft, which may be rounded on its lower end, as at Y), for a purpose hereinafter given, a bolt, c, having a T-shaped head, d,
4o in which is formed a slot7 e, to receive the fulcrumal pivot g, and to allow a sliding longitudinal movement to the bolt. Upon the lower extremity of the bolt is formed a pawl, j', adapted to engage with aratchet-wheel, h, ar-
ranged to have a fixed or stationary relation to the door-jamb or part upon which the transom is hung. i
In connection with the bolt c is employed a spring, c-preferably a CCilspring-arranged around the bolt, adapted to automatically cause 5o the bolt pawl to engage with theV ratchet. Said coil-spring may bear on the shoulder lof the bolt and against the lugs or projections m on the bed-plate; or other arrangements of the spring may be made to produce the same result.
Upon the fulcrumal pivot c is arranged the lever u, which is provided with bearings. o (shown in outline in Fig. 2) on each side ofr the fulcrum g, so that by raising or lowering 6o the projecting extremity of the lever, one of said bearings engages with one of the projections of the Tshapcd head, and the bolt is raised from holding contact with the ratchet.
rlhe arrangelnent of the ratchet-teeth and pawl-arms is such as that when the two are in engagement the transom will. be prevented from swinging in either direction.
The ratchet-wheel provides a bearing or liournal, p, Fig. 3, upon which the bed-plate 7o secured to the transom'revolves, said ratchetwheel remaining stationary, as before stated, being carried by a plate, q, having an angular stud, o', thereon which passes into a corre spondingly-angular aperture in the ratchet, as shown in Fig. 3, and in outline in Fig. 2.
In operation, when the parts are arranged in their relative positions upon the transom and door-frame, thelever may be pulled downward by a cord, by which action the bolt is So drawn up and the pawl disengaged from the ratchet-wheel, thus allowing the transom to be opened. By pushing the lever with a cane or a rod the same action will result and the transom be closed, the spring causing the parts to 8 5 lock when the power is removed from the lever.
It is not necessary that the pivotal portions vof the device be in the' center of the transom,
as, by aneans of my improvements, the said transom may be pivoted at or near either the 9o upper or lower edge of the same, the plate (t at its upper or lower extremity being rounded toA allow a pivotal movement thereof, as will be understood. i
Having thus described our invention, what we claim is- 1. In a transonradjuster, the combination, with a stu d secured to a stationary part on which the ratchet is xed, and a bed-plate secured to the transom on which the ratchet is jonrnaled, of said ratchet, a bolt engaging therewith having a T-shaped head, and apivoted lever having bearings under each side of the T-head to engage therewith, as set forth.
2. rlhe combination of the ratchet-wheel, anY
angular stud in the do0r-jamb on which the ratchet-wheel is fixed, the bed-plate a, secured ro to the transom provided with an opening in from the transom by which the holt is operated, 1 5 assetforth.-
In testimony that We claim the foregoing We have hereunto set our hands this 7th day of June, 1883.
H. HARDENBERGI-I. GUSTAV ARNO WEINRnroH.
