UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
oTIs E. DAVIDSON, oF NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE, ASSIeNoR, BY DIRECT AND MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, To w. w. MARTIN, o E SAME PLACE.
SEAL-LOC K.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 400,445, dated April 2, 1889.
Application filed May 12, 1888.
To all whom t may concern:
fBe it known that I, OTIs E. DAVIDSON, of Nashville, in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Seal-Locks; and
`I do hereby declare the following to be afull,
' production of an improved car-door seal and lock not easily broken or destroyedY by the rough usage to which they are subjected. To this end the invention consists in certain novel details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, to be hereinafter described, and pointed out particularly in the claims at the end of this specification.
In the accompanying,r drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a seal and lock constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 0c Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an elevation looking from the bottom. Fig. 4 is a similar View looking at the side away from the hasp. Fig. 5 is a view of the rear side.
Similar letters of reference in the several figures indicate the same parts.
The base A of the device is preferably castiron, having a recess, B, in the under side and the extensions C at top and bottom, in which are holes for the insert-ionof bolts to hold the device in position on the door-j amb. The central portion, D, on the outside is raised slightly above the general surface and has an on the spindle portion to afford the necessary room for the hasp between the shoulders H and the base D. On one of the shoulders H is located a slight projection, with a largelheaded stud, K, thereon, corresponding to the Serial No. 273,678. (No model.)
head F on the stud e. The end of the turnbolt G- projects through the base A and into the recess B in the under side, and has rigidly secured thereon a ratchet-wheel, M, with vwhich a pawl, N, on the base engages, being held in engagement by the long spring O, all said parts being located Within the recess before mentioned.
The parts having been assembled as above described, when it is desired to lock and seal the door, the door is closed and the hasp placed overthe turn-bolt and beneath the two shoulders H, the bolt being then turned until the studs F and K are near each other, when a seal, L, having a slot therein, a portion of which at a point intermediate the ends is widened to permit the heads to pass through, is slipped over said heads and the bolt further rotated until the studs are drawn to the ends of the slot, when it will be found that the seal cannot be removed without being broken, as the turn-bolt cannot be turned backward by reason of the ratchet and pawl on the under side, as will be readily understood. The seal above mentioned has an extended section to one side of the slot, on which is placed the directions as to the destination of the car, &c., which, it will be seen from Fig. 1, are exposed in convenient position for reading. As an additional security, a padlock may be passed through the ring g, although when the seal is made of sheet metal it alone will be found to be sufiicient to resist the turning of the bolt, the two shoulders H on the latter bridging the slot in the hasp and taking up all strain on the hasp itself.
I do not wish to be limited to the exact mechanism herein described, as it is obvious` studs on the turn-bolt and base, respectively,
