Be it known that I, FERDINAND UN onnrorr,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of. Galion, in the county of Crawford and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Vault-Closure, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact descriptlon.
This invention relates to vault closures and constitutes an improvement upon the vault closure covered in my Patent No. 872,864, dated December 3, 1907. More particularly, the invention relates to a vault closure intended for lockin and g the like, and consists of a door which can be locked in positional a door frame so that it f cannot be opened from the outside without destroying the door frame or the door, and
which further, can be so adjusted that if desired it can be opened from the outside without injury thereto, after t has been locked in position.
An object of the invention is to provide a closure by means of which the vault opening can be covered by the vault door, which is securely locked from the outside, and which effects a hermetical sealing of the vault opening.
' A further object of the invention is to provlde a closure for vault or other ope'nlngs, which can be so arranged that it is impossible to open the door from the outside after it has once been locked in position, and which can be further arranged so that it is possible to open the door from the outside without injury to the door or the door frame.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims.

Before proceeding to amore detailed explanati on of my invention, it should be understood that while it is particularly useful in connection with the closures or doors of grave vaults or the like, it can also be advantageously employed for locking doors or closures of different types in position at openings of other structures. It is desirable in many cases, to provide grave'vaults and the like with strong,=durable and hermetically sealed closures for the openings therefor, to prevent unauthorized admission to the contents of the same. I provide a vault closure comprising a door plate adapted to seat against a door frame. The plate and friame are preferably of steel, iron or the The door frame may be secured at the vault opening by means-of bolts or rivets or in, any other suitable manner, depending upon the construction of the vault, which may be of metal, stone-work or the like. Slidably mounted upon the inner side of the door plate are bolt members which can projected to ard the edges of the door behind the lateral fianges of the door frame, thereby locking the door in position against by means of a rotatablecam having lobes them outwardly toward the edge of the door plate when the cam is rotated. A key-bolt member is arranged near the center of the door plate and has a threaded part located in a suitably threaded opening in the cam member. The key-bolt presents a squared head at the outer face, by means of which with the end of a suit-able wrench or other erably, a soft met-al plug, serves to secure the cam member to thekey-member so that when the latter is projected, the cam is similarly actuated to project the bolts.

The cam has a recess formed to receive a tongue carried by one of the bolts and this, too, serves to lock the cam inposition, and prevents a forward or backward rotation of the cam. In the present improved form of my invention the bolts are operatively connected with the cam by means of pivoted links which-assist in projecting the bolts when the cam is operated. The cam has a recess formed to receive the tongue in a certain position of the former so that the cam can turn in one direction only, though 'free to turn in the other direction.
This construction permits the cam to be turned so that its lobes pass beyond the bolts and the latter can return.to their inoperative positions when the key-bolt member is furtherrotated, and when the frangible member remainsunbroken. This permits the vault to be opened from the outside, if it is not desired to permanently close the vault; for example, if at later times admission to the vault is necessary.
' Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 represents a vault having an opening 2 with the door-frame 3 arranged therein. The doorframe 3 has an inwardly disposed flange 4: and is secured in place by means of screws or rivets, or in any other convenient manner. Seating against the door-frame IS a door-plate 6 having at the outer face a central boss 9 and strengthening 'ribs 10. A key-member 11 is carried by the door plate ina suitable opening and has a squared head 12 projecting beyond the outer door face, so that it can be easily manipulated by'means of a suitable tool. The keymember 11 has a threaded part 13 extending beyond the inner face of the door to plate and it is further provided with an annular shoulder 14 normally seating against the in-- ner face of the door The annular shoulder 14; is provided with peripheral teeth 7 constitutlng a ratchet.
A cam member 15 is mounted upon the threaded part 13 of the key-member by means of a suitably threaded opening therethrough. The cam member 15 has cam lobes 16 and a laterally extended annular flan e 17 normally adjacent to the inner face 0 the door.
Bolts 22 are slidably mounted upon the inner face of the door and are cut away for the purpose of reducing the weight, and the amount of material necessary therefor. They are preferably triangular in form and have the apexes adjacent at the center of the door plate. At the sides adjacent to the corresponding sides of the door plate the bolts have toes 23 having recesses 24; arranged to receive studs 25 rigid with the door plate. The studs have cross bars 26 which engage at the inner sides of the toes 23 and guidingly hold the bolts upon the door frame.
Each of the bolts has a central slot 27 which erative position. At the apex, each bolt has a cut away portion having a shoulder 30 adapted to engage a shoulder 31 of the cam to prevent the rotation of the cam member in One direction.
A dog 19 is pivotally mounted upon the face plate and is normally held out of engagement with the ratchet- 7, owing to the interposition of'the annular flange 17, the cam member having a recess 20 which re ccives the ratchet 7 when the cam is in it s normal position against the door plate. Links- 32, pivotally mounted by means of screws 33 or the like, operatively connect the cam and the bolts to assist in projecting the latter when the cam is rotated. It will be understood that the engagement of the cam lobes with the apexes of the triangular bolts, force the latter outward beyond the edges of the door plate as the key-member is ro- 11o tated, the cam turning with the key-member owing to the provisionof a frangible plug or a block 34, between the ratchet and the recess 20, the latter having an extension 35 at one side, which receives the plug 34. The
- plug 34 is positioned in the extension 35 and between two adjacent teeth of the ratchet, as is shown most clearly in Fig. 5.
One of the bolts has a recess 36 in which is slidably arranged a tongue 37 normally projected by means of ahelical spring 38 arranged within the recess. One of the lobes of the cam has a notch 39 which is adapted to receive the end of the tongue when the cam is moved into a predetermined position. When the tongue engages the notch as is shown in Fig. 2, thecam is held against rotation in either direction and the bolts are then secured in the projected positions. In the normal condition of the closure, the bolts are withdrawn from the edges of the door plate and the cam rests against the inner face of the same, as is shown most clearly in Fig; 1, the key-bolt member and the cam being opcratively connected by means of the frangible plug 34.. When it is desired to close the opening of the vault, the door is placed in position, with the edges engaging the flange of the door frame and if so desired, with the interposition of a gasket 43 between the door frame and thedoor. The key bolt member 12 is then turned and the cam is thereby actuated to project the bolts to the inside of the flange of the door frame, thus locking the" door in position.
As soon asthe tongue 37 slips into engage-- ment with the notch 39, further movement of the cam is prevented and if the key-bolt member is further rotated the frangible member is ru tured. A continued rotation of the key-b0 t member th'enforces the cam outwardly owing to the provision of the threaded part 13. y
The movement of the cam away from the door plate carries the bolts with it, as the flange 17 is positioned underneath the apexes of the bolts. The latter act as lovers, the cross bars 26 serving as fulcrums, and thus clamp the door plate securely against the door frame, as is shown most clearly in Fig. 4. The movement of the cam away from the door plate leaves the dog '19 free -to come into engagement with the ratchet 7 whereby, too, a return movcmcnt of rotation of the key-bolt member is prevented. In this. way the closure is permanently locked in position and effects a hermetical sealing of the opening of the vault; and it is impossible to obtain admission to the vault without destroyingthe closure.
If it is desired to close the vault, but not to do so permanently, the links 32 can be removed at their cam ends and the cam turned so that the edge recess 40 will be engaged by the tongue when the bolts are projected. The, links can then be again se-' cured to the cam andthe door placed in position. Then the key-bolt member is now turned the bolts willbe projected and the tongue will slip into engagement with As the latter engages the tongue at one side only, thereof it is possible to continue the movement of the cam until the lobes pass beyond the apexes of the bolts, whereupon the latter under the Influence of the springs 29 will return to an inoperative positioin to permit the door to be opened.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A vault closure comprising a door adapted to seat against a door frame, bolts carried by said door, a key member having an initial movement adapted to project said bolts behind said frame, and having a second movement adapted to clamp said bolts against said frame, and links for operatively connecting said key member and each of said bolts.
2. A vault closure, comprising a door adapted to seat against a door frame, slidable bolts, means for successively projecting said bolts toward said frame and forcing said bolts into inclined positions with respect to the face of said door to clamp said bol's against said frame, and links operativeiy connecting said means and said bolts.
- 3. A vault closure, comprising a door adapted to seat against a door frame, bolts movably mounted onsa'id door, an operating member formed in sections and serving to project said bolts, a frangible member con nccting said sections and adapted to be means for clamping said bolts against said frame by the continuous movementof said operating member, a member preferably a dog forflocking said operating member against a return movement, and liiiks operatively connecting said operating member and said bolts.
4. A vault closure, comprising a. door. adapted to seat against a door frame, bolts movably mounted upon said'door, an operating member controlling said bolts to project the same, and a resiliently projected tongue whereby oneof said bolts when p ro jceted, controls said operating member to lock the same against a return movement.
A vault closure, comprising a door adapted to seat against a door frame, bolts movably mounted upon said door, and an operating member controlling said bolts to project the same, one of said bolts having a normally pro ected tonguewhereby when said bolt is pro ected, said tongue engages said operating member to lock the same against a return movement, said operating member being adapt-ed by a continuous movement to clamp said bolts against the door frame when said bolts are projected.
6. A vault closure, comprising a door adapted to seat against a door frame, bolts movably mounted upon said door, one of said bolts having a normally projected movable tongue, and an operating member controlling said bolts to project the same, said operating member having a" recess adapted to receive said tongue when said bolts are projected, whereby said member is locked against movement.
'7. A vault closure, comprising a door adapted to seat a ainst a door frame, bolts movably mounted uponsaid door, one of said bolts havin a normally projected movable tongue, an an operating member controlling said bolts to project the same, said member having a recess adapted to receive said tongue when said bolts are whereby said member is locke movement in one direction.
8. A vault closure, comprising a door adapted to seat against a door frame, slidable bolts carried by said door, akey-member mounted upon said door, a cam carried by said key-memberand adapted to project said bolts when said key-member is operated, said key-member having means controlled by its movement for clamping said bolts when the latter are projected, against said door frame, one of said bolts having a normally projected movable tongue, said cam having a recess adapted to receive said against -tongue when said cam is in a position such that said bolts are projected, whereby said cam is locked against movement.
9. A vault closure, comprising a door adapted to seat against a door frame, bolts movably mounted on said door, an operating member formed in sections to project said bolts, a frangible member connecting said sections and adapted to be broken when said bolts are forced home,.means for clamp ing said bolts against said frame by a continuous movement of said operating member, springs tending normally to force said bolts outward from said door, and means for guidingly holding said bolts in position against said door.
10. A vault closure, comprising a door adapted to seat againsta door frame, bolts carried by said door and having slots, lugs rigid with said door and received by said slots, springs in said slots and engaging said lugs, whereby said bolts are held in normal positions, a key-member having an initial movement adapted to project said bol's behind said frame and having a second movement adapted to clamp said bolts against said frame, springs tending normally to force said bolts outward from said door, means for guidingly holding said bolts against said door, and links operatively connecting said key member and said bolts.
11. A vault closure, comprising a door adapted to seat against a door frame, bolts carried by said door, a key-member having an initial movement adapted to projectsaid bolts behind said frame and having a second movement adapted to clamp said bolt-s against said frame, and a dog for prevent.- ing the rotation of said key-member in one (projected,
the movement of sai direction, said dog being normally inoperative and being rendered operative by the second movement of said key-member.
12. A vault closure, comprising a door adapted to seat against a door frame, bolts movably mounted on said door, an operatin member formed in sections to pro ect said bolts, a frangible member connecting said sections and adapted to be broken when said bolts are forced home, means for clamping said bolts against said frame by a continued movement of said operating member, and a dog for preventing the rotation of said key member in onedirection, said dog being normally inoperative, and being ren- "dered operative by the second movement of said operating member, and links connecting one of said sections of said operating member with said bolts,
13. A vault closure, comprising a door adapted to seat against a door frame, slidable bolts carried by said door, a key-member mounted upon said door, a cam carried by said key-member and adapted to project said bolts when said key member is operated, said key-member having means controlled by its movement for clamping said bolts when the latter are projected against said door frame, one of said bolts having a normally projected movable tongue, said cam being formed to receive said tongue when it is in a position such that said bolts are projected, whereby said cam is locked against further movement, and a dog for preventing the rotation of said key-member in one direction, said do being normally inoperative and being rendered operative by key-member to clamp said bolts.
14. A vault closure, comprising a door adapted to seat against a door frame, slidable bolts carried by said door, a rotatable key member, a cam having lobes adapted to project said bolts, a frangible member con necting said key-member and said cam, said cam having shoulders engaging said bolts,
said key member having a ratchet, said cam having a recess adapted to receive said ratchet when said cam is in a normal position against said door, a dogadaptedto engage said ratchet and held from engagement therewith by said cam when the same is in a normal position, meanscarried by. said key member for forcing said cam away from said door when said frangible member is broken, and means on one of said bolts for engaging said cam to lock the same against rotation when said cam is in a position such that said bolts are projected.
15. A vault closure, comprising a door adapted to seat against a door frame, slid able bolts carried by said door, a rotatable key member carried by said door and having a threaded section, said key member being operable from the outer side of said door, a
