UNITED STATES PATENT ()EEicE.
THOMAS SPRIGGS, OF MITCHELL, KANSAS.
LOCK -HINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 395,086, dated December 25, 1888. Application filed January 31, 1838. Serial No. 262,486. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS SPRIeGs, of Mitchell, in the county of Rice and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Door-Checks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to doorchecks for holding doors open, and has for its object to provide a door-check whereby a door may be securelyheld open at different distances. The
invention consists in a door-cheek for this purpose constructed and arranged as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figurel illustrates the door-check with covering-plate removed applied to a door and frame broken away. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section thereof on line as :11, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a central. vertical section thereo t. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are detail. views of parts detached and broken away.
In the constructimi of this device abolt, 1, Formed with an enlarged portion, 2, having a number of sides, 3, employed, located in the enlarged portions of the straps (3, the enlarged portion 7 of strap or bar 8, and the enlarged portion 9 of strap or bar 10.
The door 11 and frame 12 are cut away to permit of the parts being placed in position and the straps 6 S fastened by screws 13. To the bolt 1, cut away, as at 14, is pivoted the forked end 15 of a lever, 16, having an oval open portion, 17, in which is located cam 18, mounted on the end of a rod, 19, passing through slot or hole in door 11 and provided with an opening-handle, 21.
The lever 16 is formed with an arm, 22, having a slot, 23, loosely mounted on a pin, 24, in plate 25, which is held in place by the screws 13 and covers the lever 16 and cam 18. The
straps 6 are covered by a plate, 26, held in place by screws The enlarged portions 1 and 9 are formed with round openings 27, in which the bolt 1 may slide or turn, while the enlarged portions 5 and 7 are formed with openings 28, adapted in shape to the enlarged portion 2 of the bolt 1 and permitting the latter to slide therein, but not to turn. In this way it will be seen that when the enlarged portion 2 of said bolt engages openings 5 and 7, as in Fig. 3, the door cannot turn on its hinges, but that when the portion 2 is raised clear of portion 5 then the door 11 is free to move.
In operating this device, the bolt 1 being in the posit-ion shown in Fig. 1, the door is opened the desired distance, when the portion 2 of bolt 1 will register with opening 28 in enlarged portion 5, and upon turning thehandle 21. the cam 18 will act upon lever 16 to slide bolt 1 downward and throw enlarged portion 2 into engagement with opening 28, thereby lockin the door securely in the desired open position. The enlarged portion 2 and the opening 28 maybe of such shape or with as many corresponding sides as to lock the door at any angle desired.
\Vhile a specific construction of parts has been set forth, I do not intend to limit my self thmreto, as the bolt 1 may be operated by other mechanism than that shown, and the locking parts may be of different form to accomplish. the same result. The invention. broadly covers a vcrtically-sliding reciprocating bolt and operating mechanism mounted on a door and a socket mounted on the doorframe, the sliding bolt being adapted to be thrown into and out of engagement with the socket to hold a door located looked in different open positions.
Having thus described m y invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A door-check to hold doors in different open positions, consisting of a socket-piece mounted on the door-frame and a socket-piece mounted on the door, in combination with a vertically-sliding bolt having lockin g projections adapted to engage the socket-pieces and a lever for operatin the bolt, substantially as described.
2. A door-check to hold a door in different open positions, consisting of socket-pieces attached, respectively, to the door an d door-tram e and a verticallysliding bolt having an irregular enlarged portion, in combination with straps secured on the door and door-frame,
having irregular openings therein adapted to register With each other as the door is moved and through which the bolt passes, substantially as described.
3 The combination, with straps 10 and 8, secured to door 11 and having enlarged portions 9 7, with sockets 27 2S, and straps 6, se cured to door-frame 12 and having sockets 27 28, of bolt 1, having enlarged portion 2, with sides 3 and lever 16, having opening 17, cam 18, rod 19 in socket 20, handle 21, and covering-plates 25 26, substantially as described.
4. A door-check consisting of a verticallysliding locking-bolt having a projection thereon and a lever and operating-handle located on the door, in combination with socketed straps having irregular openings therein, through which said bolt passes, substantially as described.
