To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that T, JOSEPH R. Po'rrs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mechanicsburg, county of Cumberland, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Latch- Bolts for Doors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing'.
This invention relates to a latch bolt for doors and has for an object to provide an improved construction of latch connected with the door liftso that in the primary movement thereof the latch is rst withdrawn from contact with the locked door section and the door subsequently raised in the continued upward movement of the lift.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will behereinafter fully set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims.

Like numerals refer to like parts in the several views of the drawing.`
The numeral 10 designates the door frame which is preferably angular, as shown in my Patent #7 66,061 although it may be of any desired configuration. This frame is composed of angle irons having a verticalV outer wall 11 which contacts with the con` crete or other material in which the frame is set. This construction prevents the hinges or spring mountings from coming in contact with such concrete and completely incloses them in the angle irons so that they are at all times accessible and yet are protected from injury when the doors 12 and 13 are opened. These doors are pivoted by means of the hinge straps 14, as shown in my patent before referred to, which are inset into the side frame and secured in bearings 15 and 16 mounted thereon. Either of the doors may, if desired, be provided with a truss 17, and the door 12 is formed with a locking device 18 by which it may be rigidly held in contact with the frame, as shown in said patent.
For the purpose of counterbalancing the weight of the door to effect an easy opening and closing thereof, a tension spring 22 is provided and mounted on the frame at one side wall thereof. For the purpose of mounting the spring a the bearing l5 is provided with the angularly disposed wall 23 having a bearing socket therein adapted to receive one end of the rod 25 to which the spring 22 is secured by any desired means. This spring comprises the central loop portion 26 adaptedto contact with the door and the opposite coiled-ends 27 embracing the rod 25. The outer end of each of these coils is held to the rod by means of the bolt 23 through which it passes and this bolt is clamped in position by means of the nut 29. The opposite end of the rod is mounted in a bearing 30, as shown in Fig. 2, and is there provided with a series of vapertures 31 into which a tool may be introduced for rotating the rod to adjust the tension of the spring carried thereby. The rod is held at its adjusted position by means of a key 32 passing through an aperture therein and being adapted to contact with a keeper 34 secured to the frame.
One of the door members is provided with a latch bolt 36 which is provided with an actuating pin 37 adapted to be operated by means of the lifting bail 38. This bail is provided with a plate 39 slidingly mounted in the lock well 40 and formed with a diagonally disposed slot 41 in which the pin 37 travels to produce a recipr'ocation of the bolt 36, as shown in Figs.5 and 6. The latch plate 39 is also provided with a hasp plate 42 disposed at an angle thereto and adapted to pass over a staple 43 disposed upon the upper surface of the lock well 40. The lifting bail 38 being pivoted at 44 to the plate 39 is adapted to fold into horiz'ontal position within the lock well and to be secured in such position by any suitable means, for instance, a pad lock 45 applied to the staple 43, as shown in Fig. 3. The bolt 36 is adaptedto slide in ways 46 and 47 at opposite sides thereof and the movement of the plate carried by the lifting bail polsitively controls the shifting of the latch bo t.
Inthe operation of the invention it will be seen that the counterbalancing springs are so mounted and adjusted as to effect an easy opening and closing of the doors and the mounting of these doors upon the frame is such as to permit access to their pivots and also the spring mounting at any time. One of the doors is secured to the frame by the locking devices carried thereon and the opposite door locked in contact with the secured door by means of the automatic latch carried by the lifting bail. An upward movement of this bail first withdraws the latch from contact with the locked door and then permits a free opening movement of the door, while in the return movement, a downward pressure on the bail after the door is closed forces the latch bolt into engaging position when the bail may be disposed within the lock well and entirely beneath the upper surface of the door where it is secured by a pad lock or other desired means.
Having described my invention and set forth its merits, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A frame, a door pivoted thereto, a bail for said door, a latch bolt for said door and a sliding latch plate connected to said bail and bolt for unlatching movement in the upward movement of said bail.
2. A frame, a door pivoted thereto, a bail for said door,a sliding latch bolt, a sliding latch plate adapted to operate said bolt and carried by said bail, and means for securing said plate in latching position.
3. A frame, a door pivoted thereto, a bail for said door, a sliding latch bolt, a latch plate adapted to operate said bolt and carried by said bail, an angular locking plate extended from said latch plate, and a staple adapted to pass through said locking plate.

A frame, a door pivoted thereto, a bail for said door, a sliding latch bolt, a latch plate adapted to operate said bolt and carried by said bail, an angular locking plate extending from said latch plate, a staple adapted to pass through said locking plate, and a pivotal connection between said lifting bail and latch plate.
5. A frame, a door pivoted thereto, a bail for said door, a sliding latch bolt, a latch plate adapted to operate said bolt and carried by said bail, an angular locking plate extended from said latch plate, a staple adapted to pass through said locking plate, a pivotal connection between said lifting bail and latch plate, a lock well carried by the upper surface of the door, and a lock applied to said staple to secure said latch plate in position.
6. A frame, a door pivoted thereto, a sliding latch mounted upon said door and having a lateral projection, a sliding latch plate provided with an actuating slot into which said projection extends, and a bail secured to said latch plate.
7. A frame, a door pivoted thereto, a sliding latch mounted upon said door and having a lateral projection, a latch plate provided with an actuating slot into which said projection extends, a bail secured to said latch plate, an angularly disposed locking plate carried by said latch plate, and a lock well having a staple adapted to extend through said locking plate.
8. A frame, a door pivoted thereto, a sliding latch mounted upon said door and having a lateral projection, a latch plate provided with an actuating slot into which said projection extends, a bail secured to said latch plate, an angularly disposed locking plate carried by said latch plate, a lock well having a staple adapted to extend through said locking plate, and a guiding flange disposed to engage said latch upon the opposite side thereof from the latch plate.
9. A frame, cooperating doors pivoted thereon, means for locking one of said doors in contact with said frame, a latch bolt carried by the opposite door and adapted to engage a member carried by the locked door, a sliding latch plate connected to said bolt, and a bail connected to said plate whereby upward movement of said bail produces a releasing movement of the bolt preliminarily to the opening movement of the door.
