Description

No. 768,730. PATENTED AUG. 30,1904
W. 0. BRINKERHOFF.
SASH LOCK.
APPLICATION FILED MAR- 22, 1901.
WITNESSES m VENTOH UNITED STATES Patented August 30, 1904.
WVILLIAM C. BRINKERHOFF, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SASH-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 768,730, dated August 30, 1904.
Application filed March 22, 1901.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, TILLIAM (l. BRINKER- HOFF, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash- Locks, of which the following is a specification.
The main object of my invention is to provide a sash-lock which will permit of locking the window-sash when partly open and which can only be unlocked from the inside when the window is in its closed position.
I accomplish these objects by the device shown in the accompanying drawings, in
- which Figure l is a perspective View, partly broken away, of my device as applied to the lower sash of a window, the window being shown locked in a partly-open position. Fig. 2 is a View of the device shown partly in plan and partly in section. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the lower end of the guide.
In the form shown 1 is a window-frame, 2 is the lower sash of the window, 3 is a rail or guide secured to said window-sash in a position parallel to one side of the frame. This guide is preferably made of bulbed I-shaped section or T rail, having a flange isecured to the window-sash, a web 5 integral with said flange, and surmounted by an extended bulb or flange 6. At the lower end of the rail 3 the web 5 is swelled to form a shoulder 7. A hinged member 8 is secured to the frame 1 by means of the plate 9. The standing end of said hinged member is forked or hooked to partly encircle the bulb 6 of said guide and is adapted to slide thereon until stopped by the shoulder 7 of the web of said guide, thus permitting of opening the window for adistance equal to the length of said guide while the device is in its locking position. The hinged member 8 is so situated with respect to the guide 3 that when the window-sash is in its Serial No. 52,318. (No model.)
closed position the fork 10 may be thrown in and out of engagement with the guide by being swung on the pin 11.
To operate my device when applied to the lower sash of a window, it is only necessary to swing the forked end 10 of the hinged member into line with the guide 3 when the window is in its closed position. The window may now be raised until the lug 7 meets the prongs of the fork 10, and thus prevents further upward movement of the sash. To unlock the device, it will now be necessary to entirely close the sash before the forked end of the hinged member can be thrown out of engagementwith the said guide. To apply the device to the upper sash, the guide-rail may be inverted so that the shoulder 7 is at the upper end of said guide or the locking members may be interchanged so that the guide-rail will be on the window-frame.
It will be understood that some of the details of the device shown may be altered without departing from the spirit of my invention. I therefore do not confine myself to such details except as hereinafter limited in the claim.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a sash-lock, the combination of a guide having two flanges connected by a web in the form of a T-rail, the web at one end of said guide being swelled to form a shoulder; a hinged member, comprising a flange to which is hinged a forked arm adapted to span both of the flanges of said guide and slide freely along said guide until stopped by the swelled portion of said web, said forked arm being adapted to be disengaged from said guide.
Signed at Chicago this 20th day of March, 1901.
WILLIAM (J. BRINKERHOFF.
