To all whom it may concern:
, UNT 'SnAwmsKI', a citizen of Poland, andresident of South Plainfield, in the county of Middlesex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Doors for Freight Cars, of which the following is a specification.
The main object of this invention is the provision of a safety lock for freight car doors, in order to prevent the numerous and frequent thefts prevalent in railroad yards and on side tracks owing to the failure of the looks at present used to defy the manipulations of burglars.
The above and other objects will become apparent in the description below, in which like characters of reference refer to likenamed parts in the drawings.
Referring briefly to the drawings, Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a freight car, illustrating the application of my lock.
Fig. 2 is a diagrammatic, fragmentary side elevational view of a portion of said car, illustrating the means of opening the door lock of said car.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view of the operatingmechanism of'my lock, the latter being in closed position.
Fig. 4: is a cross-sectional view taken on the line 44 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional View taken on the line 5--5 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail view of the operating mechanism of my-lock, the latter being in open position.
Referring now in detail to the drawings, the numeral 1 represents the side walls of a freight car and 2 the entrance to the interior thereof, in which the door 3 is slidably mounted on a runway 35. A- plate 4 is attached to the door 3 as shown, and an upwardly pointing hooked member 5 is rigid with the upper end of said plate, while a T-shaped member 7 is ri id with the lower end of said plate, 'both 0% said members extending beyond the edge of the door. The hook 5 provides a recess 6, and the T-shaped member 7 provides recesses 8 and 9. A supporting plate 10 is attached to the car wall adjacent the doorway, and a bearing plate 11 is mounted upon pins 11 spaced parallel to the plate 10. A guide bar 22 limits the outward lateral movement of the levers 19. A coiled spring 23 is attached to both levers 19 and tends to draw'them together. With the parts in the relative positions shown in Fig. 3, the door'being locked, the same may be opened if the shaft 13 is rotated in a counter-clockwise direction, for the cam 18 will then cause the levers 19 to separate, withdrawing the lever ends 20 from the recesses 8 and 9, and at the same time withdrawing the member 29 from the recess 6. Therefore the door 3 may be withdrawn, the parts bein then in the relative positions shown in %ig. 6. Y
A key having a socket adapted to grip the squared end l3 of the shaft 13 may be used to turn the shaft, and I have provided additional security to the look by having a cover 31 pivotally mounted adjacent the keyhole 30' and adapted to be swung into position to conceal the hole 30. A thumb screw 33 may be screwed into a recess 34 and thereby retain the cover in locked position. 1
