BOLT-LOOK.
Application filed May 22, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUGH DnMrsnY, a cit1 zen of the United States of America, residing at Spokane, in the-county of Spokane and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bolt- Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention pertains to bolt-locks and particularly to bolt-locks for swinging doors and gates.
The object of the invention is toprovide a substantial and practical lock of thecharacter mentioned that can'be readily thrown in and out of locking engagement.
The invention will be hereinafter fully described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1, is a View, in side elevation, of the lock, together with a broken-away view of a gate and a post showing the application of the lock thereto,
Fig. 2, is a plan view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a sectional View taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
In a detail description of the invention in which like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views, a vertically arranged gate post 10 has a horizontal opening 11 therein. A vertically arranged end support 12 of a gate has attached thereto a horizontally arranged plank 13 to which is attached, as by bolts 14, two links 15 in which is slidably adjusted a bolt 16. Also secured to the plank 13 in spaced relation to each other are two bolts 17 and 18 having upwardly extending lug portions 19 and 20. Pivotally attached to the bolt 16, as at 21, is a latch 22 having attached to the free end thereof a handle 23 and having cut in the lower edge thereof in spaced relation to each other, notches 24 and 25. The handle 23 has a portion 26 extending. over the bolt 16 and into which is cut a slot 27. Attached to the top of the bolt 16 is an upstanding flange 28, provided with an opening therethrough adapted to protrude through the slot 27. 16 the parts are in the position shown, excepting that the latch 22 is horizontal with the bolt 16, with the portion 20 of the bolt 18 engaging the notch 25.
If it is desired to secure the parts in this position a padlock 29 may be locked through the flange 28, which will prevent the disengagement of the same without first removing the padlock. v
When it is desired to throw the bolt to disengage the locked position of the same as shown, the operator seizes the handle 23 and manually lifts upwardly on the same. until the portion 20 of the bolt 18 is released from the notch 25, then pushes backwardly on the same which will slide the bolt 16 to the position of the dotted lines 16*, then drops the latch 22. The latch 22 is then in the position of the dotted lines 22 with the pivoted end thereof resting against the portion 19 of the bolt 17, and with the parts 21 and 25 in the position as shown by 21 and 25 and the notch 24 engages the portion 20 of the bolt 18 with the handle 23 in the position of the dotted lines 23 and the flange 28 in the position ofthe dotted lines 28 What is claimed is,
A bolt-lock comprising a bolt adapted to be slidably mounted on a gate portion, a staple on said bolt, a latch having notches cut therein and pivoted at one end to said bolt and having a handle at its free end with a slotted portion extending over said bolt so that the staple on the bolt will engage the slot, and two lug portions adapted to be secured to said gate portion in spaced relation to each other, so that one of the notches in said latch will engage one of said lugs and that the other of said lugs will serve as a stop for the backward movement of the bolt by engaging the latch on said bolt in abutting relation.
