SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.' 484,710, dated October 18, 1892.

To all whom, t may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEROLT GIBSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Locks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved lock for window-sashes, more especially for the upper sash, and it has for its objects, principally, to prevent lateral movement of. the sashes in their grooves during the operation of locking the same; and it consists in the novel construction of devices, substantially as hereinafter more fully disclosed,and pointed out in the claims, whereby the aforesaid results may be obtained, together with the automatic locking of the upper sash in its closed position, which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a view showing my invention as applied for use to a window, parts being broken away. Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are views showing the several members or parts of my invention in detail. Fig. 5 is av modification thereof.
In the embodiment'of my invention 'I employ three parts or members A, B, and C, member A being suitably secured to the window-casing, the member B to the face of the uppersash, and the member C to the top of the lower sash.
The part or member A, besides its bracket or foot a, affording means for its attachment by screws or other suitable fastenings to the window is composed of a bifurcated arin b, integral with and offset from said bracket, providing a slot c between them. The side pieces of the bifurcated arm b are extended or carried outward and downward into the form of duplicate hooks b', a space b2 thus being provided between the edges of said duplicate hooks and the opposite edges of the side pieces of said arm, the whole constituting, substantially, a single hooked arm, the duplicating of said parts being to provide, as one, among other ways, for the pivoting of the latch, presently described, therebetween. The inner edges of the hooks b are beveled outward and downward at their lower ends to readily guide the stud of the member B, as seen farther on, into engagement therewith and to secure a snug tit or wedging action thereat.
Between the upper ends of the side pieces 0f the arm b is pivoted or hung at its upper end a latch c', having at its lower end a proj ection c2, beveled or, rather, more nearly concave upon its upper edge, so as to slope outward and downward and yet slightly curve upward at its salient edge or point to effectually lift the upper sash into its closedposition as said latch engages the member B, as more fully described hereinafter. The lower 'edge ot' the projection c2 is rounded, having a general upward and outward inclination.
At its extreme lowest end the latch c has a stop or projection c3, adapted to engage a shoulder c4 upon the outer bottom edge of the space between the side pieces of the arm b, within which said latch swings to arrest 0r limit the outward movement of the latch.
The arm or casting Z9 has projecting from its bottom or lower end a beveled catch d, and directly opposite the inner beveled side of said catch said end of the armis provided with a plain-sided stop d', slightly spaced oft therefrom, thus providing a socket d2 therebetween, said catch and stop being set inward from said end of. the arm, leaving a shoulder cl3 thereat.
The member B has at its upper end a forwardly-projecting stud e, having a beveled upper edge, as at e', to expedite its passage past the projection c2 of the latch c', and a beveled lower edge to engage the beveled, somewhat slightly-concave edge of the projection c2 of the latch c', and at its inner lower end said member has a concave and a plainsided stud e3; adapted to enter the socket d2 of the member A, the concavity of the stud engaging the convexity ot the catch d, while the plain-sided surface thereof engages the adjacent side of the stop cl. The concave and plainsided stud e3 is arranged at the inner bottom edge ot the body portion of the member B and faces in a direction at right angles to that in which the stud c faces, said stud es also having connection at its closed outer side with the inner edge of said body portion of the member B by a thickened portion or end piece e2, adapted to engage the shoulder d3 of the arm b, strengthening the same at that point.
The arm ot the member B, bearing the stud e, is slightly curved or concave upon its outer edge, thus providing a shoulder e, upon which the correspondingly-shaped lower end of one of the hooks b rests or bears to combine with said hook in preventing edgewise move ment of the sashes toward either side of the received into the slot c of the member A, andl said tooth entering the spacebctween the side pieces of the bifurcated arm b just in the rear of the latch c', to lock the latter into engagement with the stud c of the memberl B.
.The tooth f has a beveled surfacef upon its reared ge to engage a correspondingly-'beveled surface f? of the inner bottom edge ofthe slot c, to cause the compact wedging together of the members A and C in eiecting'the locking of the same together, while the shank of the member C has a plain offset f3 directly opposite the beveled surfaceV j of the tooth f, to
'provide a square or solid surface of contact I between it and said member duringthe wedging action of the tooth on said member.
Assuming that the upper sash is ope-n and it is desired to close and lock the same, thestud eol the memberB, it will be seen, asthe upper sash is shoved or pushed upward will pass or escape by the inwardly-yielding latch c and after such passage of' the stud the latch will return by theV action of gravity to its former position, permitting its projection c2 to pass under said stud, the hook b guarding or guid- Y ing the stud in a direct vertical line, thus preventing the moving of the saslres edgewise, as would otherwise be the tendency in shoving the sashes home or into their closed position. The horizontal arm of the member() will then enter the slot c off the member A, and, through its tooth engaging the latch, force the latch into such position as to cause the projection cfto engage at its upper edge the bottom edge of the stud e, the action of which, it is obvious, will cause the stud e to ride upward thereon, and thus secure the automatic and eectual closing of the upper sash and rml'y hold it i against being jarred down to any extent. The coming together or engagement of the concave stud e3 and catch d and the wedging action of the hook C upon the member A, bringing the meeting-rails of the sashcs close together, have the eect to prevent the rattling of the sashes from the action of the wind or other cause.
In Fig. 5 is shown a modification of the parts or members A and B, it being understood, of course, that the part C is to be used in connection therewith in practice.
It will be understood that I make no claim in this application to subjectmatter claimed in my application filed July 27, 1891, and serially numbered 400,801, to wit:
The combination of a member fixed to the casing, having a latch hung in an oset-arm' thereof, and a slot in rear of said arm, and said latch standing partially outward beyond said arm and partiallyin said slot,a member Y xed to the upper sash, having a slot to engage said latch, and a member xed to the lower sash, having a hook to enter said slot and interlock the latch of the member fixed to the casing with the stud of the member secured to the upper sash.
Nor do I make claim in this application to snbject-matter j claimed in my application filed February 23, 189.2,and serially numbered 422,447, to wit:
