UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARRY I. WILLIAMS, OF DECATUR, TEXAS.
SASH-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 380,237, dated March 2'7, 1888.
Application filed November 26, 1887. Serial No. 256,263. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HARRY I. WILLIAMS, of Decatur, in the county of Wise and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sash-Fasteners, of which the following is aspecification.
My invention relates to sash-fasteners for holding and looking a window-sash either in an open or closed position; and it consists in the combination of a ratchet-bar attached to the sash, a grooved or hollow bar attached to the window-frame and bearing a spring-pawl engaging with the ratchet-bar, and a wedgeshaped stop with supporting-chain, as will be hereinafter fully described.
Figure 1 is a front elevation, and Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section on line a a; of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, A represents the windowframe, and B is the upper and O the lower sash. D is the ratchet-bar, which is made of metal, with downwardly-pointing teeth a,- and E is the hollow metal bar into which the ratchet-bar slides, and which, as shown, is attached to the middle of the upper portion of the window-frame, while the ratchet-bar is attached to the middle of the bottom portion of the sash. In the front of the hollow bar E is an opening, I), in which is pivoted a pawl, F, whose lower end engages with the teeth of the ratchet-bar and holds the sash in elevated po- This pawl is provided above its fulcrum with a thumb piece which projects through the opening in the hollow bar, and behind which thumb-piece is arranged aspring,
c, that holds the lower end of the pawlengaged with the ratchet-teeth. Now, when the lower sash is raised, its ratchet-bar is forced up into the hollow bar, where the ratchet-teeth are en gaged by the pawl, which thus sustains the sash in any position.
To look the sash so that it cannot be raised,
a wedge, G, is provided, which is conveniently connected to the hollow bar E by a chain, H, and this wedge is designed to be dropped bebind the projecting thumb-piece of the pawl F, where it fits into the open space in the hollow bar, and by preventing the pawl from moving out of the way of the ratchet-teeth it prevents the raising of the sash.
As shown, my devices are applied to the middle stile of the window-sash; but they may Having thus described my invention, what I 6c claim as new is.
The combination of the ratchet-bar D, the hollow bar E, with opening b, the spring-pawl F, pivoted in said opening, and the lockingwedge G, substantially as shown and described.
