Description

. PATENTED FEB. 10, 1903. G. SIMPSON.
SASH FASTENER.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 22, 1902.
Ia-Av- 10 MODEL.
UNITED STATES GEORGE SIMPSON, OF RICHMOND, VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA.
SASH-FASTENER.
SPFGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No.
720,496, dated February'IO, 1903.v
Application filed September 22, 1902. Serial No. 124,474. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
wealth of Australia, have invented an Improved Window-Sash Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for securing window-sashes; and its principal object is to provide a sash-fastener which while acting as an ordinary window-lock at the same time enables the sashes to be secured in any predetermined position and in such a manner that the window cannot be operated except from the inside of the premises. It is therefore a preventative against house-breakers and also sneak-thieves, as either or both sashes may be secured, say, six inches open for ventilating purposes without risk of illegitimate intrusion or the window may be shut and locked.
In order that the invention may be readily understood, reference will be made to the ac-- companying drawings, whereof- Figure 1 is an elevation of a window in its frame with my improved sash-fastener thereon and the sashes locked; and Fig. 2 is a similar view showing both sashes opened but secured, while Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse section on line 3 3, Fig. 1.
A represents a U -shaped pin or staple, one leg of which is adapted to fit into any one of a series of holes B, formed in the stile O of the upper sash, and the other leg into any one of a series of holes D, formed in the inside lining and edge of the pulley-stile of the window-frame E.
In order that the staple or pin A may be retained in either of the holes in which it is placed, one leg thereof-preferably the outer, which, moreover, is usually the shorter-has one or more ratchet-teeth F cut thereon, which engage the edge of a retaining and wearing plate G, having holes therein, but fitted so that said holes do not exactly, coincide with the holes in the window-frame, as illustrated in Fig. 3, in order to provide a projecting simple, durable, and efficient' edge or detent H for the teeth F. The holes 13 may be slightly inclined from the parallel, so as to throw the ratchet-teeth on the outer leg against the detent. From the set of the teeth it will be seen that the staple or pin can be pushed in, but cannot be withdrawn without disengaging its teeth by pulling it away laterally therefrom, the holes D being made of sufficient diameter to allow of the necessary play.
The bend in the staple or U-pin is preferably fitted with a filling-piece J to prevent a stick or rod being inserted from the outside by which to force it out from its holes, and thus allow the window to be either opened or closed, and a chain K usually connects same to the window-frame, so that the fastener is always convenient and ready for use.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is- 1. A window-sash fastener having two parallel legs which fit into holes in the sash-stile and the window frame, respectively, and means engaging with one of said parallel legs forretaining said fastener in operative position.
2. An improved window-sash fastener consisting of a U shaped pin or staple, one of the legs of which has a ratchet-tooth or ratchetteeth thereon adapted to engage the edge of a hole in a retaining and wearing plate substantially as and for the purposes set forth and as illustrated.
3. An improved window-sash fastener consisting of a U-shaped pin or staple the bend of which is fitted with a filling-piece, and the legs of which engage holes in the sash-frame and window-frame respectively substantially as and for the purposes set forth and as illustrated.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing wit- IIQSSBS.
GEORGE SIMPSON. Witnesses:
EDWARD WATERS, WILLIAM Josnrn BURTON.
