Be it known that I, CURTIS H. Hons-Kriss, a citizen of the United States, residing at Northeast Harbor, and State of Maine, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sash Holders and Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to improvements in sash-fasteners.

The object of the present invention is to produce a sash-fastener of great simplicity and cheapness, capable of ready and convenient attachment to any window, one that will permit the window-sashes to be quickly raised or lowered from one position to another, and will securely retain them in any desired position without liability of their falling or becoming displaced.

The invention consists in the novelcombination and arrangement of the parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.

In the drawings, Figure Il. is a perspective view of a window provided with a sash-fastener constructed in accordance with this invention, showing the outer sash partly lowered and the inner sash slightly raised. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the adjustable arm, which is secured to the outer sash and provided with a spring-catch. Fig. 8 is a detail sectional view ofthe spring-catch.

Referring to the drawings, A designates a window of ordinary construction, provided with a rod, B, depending from the lintel C, to which it is secured in any suitable manner, preferably by screws, which pass through a flattened projection, d, of'a collar, I), fastened to the upper end of the depending rod B.

In the accompanying drawings I have shown the depending rod B situated at the middle of the lintel C, but it may be preferable to place it at either side of the window; and I desire it to be understood that I do not limit myself to theprecise details of construction herein shown and described, as I may without departing from the spirit of the invention make any minor changes therein. point in the depending rod B. The two springcatches are similar in construction and operation, and a description of one will suffice for both.

The spring-catch E is composed of a casing, E', provided with an opening or passage, e', through which passes the depending rod B, and a lever, E2, suitably fulcrumed to the casing E', intermediate of its ends, one of which is provided with a pawl, e, that slides in a slot, e?, which communicates with the openings e', and the other is provided with a spring, e3, preferably spiral, that is secured to the casing E', and also to the under side of the lever E2, against which it bears, whereby the pawl e, sliding in the slot e2, is caused to remain normally in engagement with depending rod B. The handle e5 is employed to facilitate the raising and lowering of the sashes.

The spring-catch E is secured to the sash, and flanges e4 are provided, having holes adapted for the reception of screws, by which the spring-catch .E is secured to the sash.

In order to make the spring-catch E adjustable, so that it can be used with sashes of different thicknesses, itis provided with an arm, E, integral with the casing E or rigidly secured thereto, which arm fits and slides in a sleeve, G, having a base, ci, secured by screws or otherwise to the top rail of a sash. By this construction the spring-catch may have its distance from the sash to which it is :attached increased or diminished at will. Thus when the spring-catch is attached to the upper rail of the upper sash of a window it will be adapted to coact with the lower sash, however thick the latter may be.

From the foregoing description and the accompanying drawings the construction, operation, and advantages of theinvention will readily be understood; and it will clearly be seen that sash-fasteners constructed in accordance with this invention are of simple and cheap construction, are adapted to be attached to any windows, are capable of permitting the sashes to be rapidly changed from one position to another, and of securely retaining them in any desired position.

Having described my invention, I claiml. In a sash-holder, the combination of the non-rotatable rod B, depending vertically from the lintel of a window and provided with the ICO notches b and the catches E, each composed of the casing E', attached to the top rail of one of the sashes and provided with the opening e for the rod B, a transverse opening, e2, and the lifting-handle e, the pivoted lever E2, having.y the detent or paWI e, and the coiled spring l c5, substantially as speoied.

2. In a sash-holder, the combination of the notched rod depending from the lintel, the casing E, having a spring-catch attached and provided with the integral arm E3, and the sleeve G, secured to the upper rail of one of the sashes to receive the arm E3, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
