UNITED STATES PATENT Orr-Ion.
CHARLES E. STELLEB, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
IMPROVEMENT IN FASTENERS FOR THE MEETING-RAILS 0E SASHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 198,861, dated January 1, 1878; application filed October 11,1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OHARLEs E. STELLER, of the city of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash- Fasteners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which they appertain to make and use the same, reference being had to theaccompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, whichform a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings represents a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 represents a horizontal sectional view of the swinging arm or lever and device for operating it. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of the plate upon which the swinging arm operates; and Fig. 4 represents a vertical longitudinal section of the swinging arm.
The object of my invention is to furnish a device for adjusting andlocking window-sash, either when closed or when opened, for the purposes of ventilation, and which is more particularly applicable to that class of windows which are suspended and operated by cords and weights.
The said invention consists in the construction of a vertical standard, having a series of horizontal slots or openings, and attached to a window-sash; also, in a. pivoted horizontally-operating hook or swinging lever, adapted to engage with said vertical bar and controlled by certain springs and catches, and in their novel combination together, all as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, all of which is further explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, of which-- A represents the lower bar of the upper sash. B is the upper bar to the lower sash. O is an adjusting-standard, which is provided with openings 11 for the reception of the adjusting arm or lever F, by which the sash is adjusted and locked, and a base-plate, D, by which it is attached with screws to the sash. The standard 0 is also providedwith an opening, E, for the finger, by which the sash is lifted and adjusted. The lower sash B is provided with a swinging arm or lever, F, which is attached to the plate G by means of a pivotbolt, N, upon which it turns. The swinging arm F extends past the screw, and forms a lever,.H, by which it is operated.
There is a slot, I, in the plate G for the reception of a projecting pin or lug,O, from the swinging arm F, which operates therein and acts as a check to the movement of the swinging arm F to prevent it fiom turning too far. J is a catch or sliding bar, the oflice of which is to lock the lever H, which thus secures the swinging" arm F in the openings of the adjusting-standard 0, thereby locking the same. The slide J is provided with a spiral spring, a, which throws the same forward past the flange L, thus locking the lever H, and thereby securing the swinging arm F in the adjusting-standard. O is aknob to the slide J, both being cast in one piece.
The slide J is inserted through an opening,
and is held'in its place by the plate G, which is secured beneath it.
There is a spiral spring, m, surrounding the rivet N, which engages with the flange L and the arm F, and serves to throw the swinging arm, F back from the adjusting-standard O instantaneously when the catch J is drawn" out.
It is obvious that by this arrangement the sash may be locked securely at both the top and bottom, or at any distance from either the top or bottom corresponding with the openings in the standard 0, or the sash may be thus locked, and then suspended midway between the top and bottom of the windowcasings, as desired, by which a safe lock against burglars is provided, while at the same time the sash is adjusted so as to secureproper ventilation at both the top and bottom of the window.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pat-- ent-- 1. The vertical adjusting-standard 0, provided with base-plate D, horizontal slots or openings b, and opening E, combined with the sash A, substantially as and for the pur-.
pose specified. I
2. The swinging arm or lever F, provided -with the catch J, spring a, and lug G, and In testimony that I claim the foregoing as pivoted to the slotted plate G by the rivet N, my own I affix my signature in presence of two substantially as and for the purpose specified. witnesses. I
3. The combination of the vertical adjust- 1 ing-standard 0, having horizontal openings 1), LHARLES STELLER with the swinging arm or lever F, constructed Witnesses:
and. operating substantially as and for the pur- K. SHAWVAN,
pose specified. F. V. KENDER,
