Description

M. GEE.
Fasteners for the Meeting-Rails of Sashes. N0. 141,640. Patented'August12J873 4M PHUTlH/THDGRAFHIC 00 m [mama's Plmmsssj UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MYRON GEE, OF OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA.
I IMPROVEMENT IN FASTENERS FOR THE MEETING-RAILS OF SASHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,640, dated August 12, 1873; application filed June 13, 1873.
1'0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MYRON GEE, of Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain Improvement in Window-Lock and Sash-Holder, of which the following is a specification:
lllyinvention relates to a window-lock and sash-holder; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of a bolt having concentric grooves and slot, a pin, thumbpiece, catch-spring, and outside case or shell, adapted either for the ordinary meeting-rail of the sash or for use in covering the mullion of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
Figure 1 is a section, showing a portion of the upper and lower sash of a two-light winthe thumb-piece; S, the bolt-spring; K, the
catch covering the mullion of the window-sash; D, the catch-chamber U, the upper, and L the lower, sash. R and O are concentric grooves in the bolt B, and G is a longitudinal slot to allow the bolt to pass upon the pin P.
The following is the operation of the lock: The bolt B being withdrawn and turned by the thumb-piece, the groove R, operating on the pin P, holds the bolt while the window is raised. When the sash L is to be lowered, and is to be locked to prevent the window from shaking by the action of the wind, the bolt is turned by the thumb-piece C until the slot G is in line with the pin P, when the spring S throws it forward, the head entering the catch-chamber D,
when it is turned by the thumb-piece O, the 7 head locking across the opening in the catchchamber D, as shown in Fig. 3.
By this means the sash are held firmly together, as shown in Fig. 1, and all rattling is prevented.
When the bolt B is thrown out by the spring S, the pin P and slot G being in line and the sash U being up, as the same is lowered the bolt B strikes the incline upon the catch K covering the mullion of the sash, and is forced back until the end of the bolt B reaches the opening in the chamber D, when it is released, and the spring S throws it into the chamber D, locking the sash L and U.
The sash -lock is adapted to balanced or weighted sash.
I What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The bolt B having the concentric grooves R and O, and the slot G operating in connection with the pin P, when constructed and arranged substantially in the manner and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination and arrangement of the bolt B having the grooves R and O, and slot G operating in connection with the pin P, the thumb-piece O, the case A, and catch K covering the mullion of the windowsash, the whole being constructed and operated substantially in the manner and for the purposes set forth.
