' E. E. DALTON.
0 WINDOW sAsH LOCK.
No. 570,007. Patented 001:. 2'7, 1896.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
l; EDVARD EDSON DALTON, @F HENOMINEE, MICHIGAN.
WINDOW-SASH LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 570,007, dated October 27, 1896. Application iiled January 6, 1896. Serial No. 574,410. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD EDsoN DAL- TON, a citizen of the United States, and a'resident of Menominee, in the county of Menominee and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders or Locks for Window-Sashes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to holders or locks for window-sashes, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and which is adapted to be connected with each of the sashes of a window and to hold the same in any desired position; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure l is a front View of a portion of the frame of a window and a portion of the sash with my improved lock or holder connected therewith, and Fig. 2 a transverse section showing two sashes and also showing in section the construction and application of my improved lock or holder.l
In the drawings forming part of this application, A represents one side of a windowframe, or a portion thereof, and B a portion of the upper sash, and in Fig. 2 a portion of the lower sash is shown at C.
The frame A, as shown in Fig. 2, is also provided with the usual beads or strips a, a2, and CL3, and by means of these beads or strips two vertical spaces a4 and a5 are formed, in
which the upper and lower sashes, respectively, are placed, and in the practice of my invention I secure to the frame A in each of said spaces a rack-bar D, which projects into vertical slots formed in the side of the sashes, as shown at d. I also form within the side of each sash, adjacent to the corresponding rack-bar D, a chamber G, the form of which is shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 and in full lines in Fig. 2, and secured to the outer side of each sash is a vertical plate H, to which is secured or on which is formed an inwardlydirected arm h, (shown in dotted lines in Fig.
1,) on which is an upwardly-directed standard 5 5 h2, (also shown in dotted linesin said figure, and the end thereof being shownjin full lines in Fig. 2.) I also employ a sliding lock-bolt K, which is supported on the arm h and the outer end of which is provided with a head k, 6o which is adapted to operate in connection with the rack-bar D, and secured to the plate H is a spring L, which operates in connection with the head of the bolt K to force it outwardly, and pivotally connected with the upper end of the standard 71,2 is a lever M, one end of which projects inwardly through the side of the sash, and said lever is provided with a depending arm m, which operates in connection with an outwardly-directed arm 7.32, formed ou 7o the inner end of the bolt K.
rlhe operation will be readily7 understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. The bolt K may be withdrawn from its connection with the rack-bar at any time by raising the inner end of the lever M, and the sashes may be raised or lowered to any desired point, where the same will be securely held by the bolt K and the spring L when the 8o lever M is released.
It will thus be seen that I provide a simple and effective lock or holder for window-sashes, and one which is well adapted to serve for the purposes for which it is intended, while being 8 5 comparatively inexpensive.
It is evident that changes in and modications of the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages, 9o and I therefore reserve the right to make all such alterations therein and modifications thereof as fairly come within the scope of the invention. r
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination with a window-sash provided with a chamber formed in one side thereof and with a rack-bar secured on the rco window-frame of a sash-lock consisting of plate H provided with inwardly-directed arm h carrying an upwardly-directed standard h2, sliding lock-bolt K, supported on arm h, and
provided with head 7u and arm 7a2, spring L seence of the subscribing witnesses, this 23d Cured on plane IfI, lever M having a depending day of December, 1895.
:mn m all constructed arlanffed and adapted T to operate substantially as hren shown and EDW'ABD EDSOA DALTON' 5 described. fitnessesz In testimony that I claim the foregoing :is D. J. VAITE,
my invention I have signed my 11ame,n pres- IV. II. BALL.
