HARRY n. soREF, oie-"MILWAUKEE, u/"Iscoiasrnt` COMBINED vHASP .anni Loox.
Application fued september 2s, i923.' serial No. 665,281@
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, HARRY E. SOREF, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Milwaukee, county of Milwaukee, and State of VVisconsim have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined I-Iasps and Locks; and I do declare the following to be a clear, exact, and complete description thereof, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which the invention pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the acompanying drawing as illustrating a constructional form in which my invention has been embodied.
The invention relates to that class of hasp fasteners for swinging outer doors in which `the lock is constituted as a part of the permanent structure, so that it cannot be misplaced or accidentally detached, and will always be in position for immediate operation.
The advantages of such a construction are recognized, and my invention resides in an improved locking device of simple construction and economical manufacture, in that no special lock needs to be manufactured in order to adapt my invention to its intended purposes. On the contrary, the lock used may be any stock lock having a swiveled shackle post upon which the lock casing and its locking mechanism are adapted to rotate.
The novelty of my invention will be pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front elevation showing my improved fastening device in locking position.
Fig. 2 is a like view showing the parts separated so as to permit the door to be opened.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view through the device, showing the preferred construction.
Fig. 4 is a like view showing a modification in some of the details.
In the drawing, the numeral 10 indicates a portion of a hinged door, and the numeral 11 a portion of the adjacent door casing. A hasp 12 of usual formation is attached by blind screws to the door, and a plate 12 to the door casing in alignment therewith. Any usual padlock 13 having a swiveled post 14 forming a shackle is employed in my invention. The post 14 is cut at a point outside of the lock casing so as to leave a straight projecting end, which latter enters a perforation in the plate 12 and is firmly secured therein. The plate will be provided with an embossment or bushing 15, surrounding the end of the post, to better retain the latter in proper position, that is, perpendicular to the plate to which it is attached.
A pin 16 is fixed in a recess in the plate 12', with its free end in position to engage the recess 17 in the face of the lock casing, usually entered by the end of the shackle, so that when in locking position, the lock casing cannot be rotated upon the post until after movement longitudinally of the post is effected or permitted through operation of the locking elements by the usual key. At such time, the lock casing will be free to slide along the post 14, and rotated so as to disengage the pin 16 from the recess 17. The lock casing may then be partially rotated upon the post so as to permit withdrawal of the hasp, and the door to be opened. The perforation in the iiap of the hasp is entered by the pin 16, and held thereon by the lock casing.
In Fig. 4 a modification is shown, in that the pin 16 is omitted from the plate 12', and a pin 18 set in the recess in the lock casing, such pin 18 being adapted to enter the recess in the plate, and operate in the manner before described to hold the lock casing against rotation upon the post 14 until permitted to do so by operation of the key.
The structure is compact and when in place the lock is secured in fixed position for immediate operation. Such arrangement has proven a great convenience.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
1. A fastening device comprising a hasp and a plate for attachment one to a door and the other to its casing, a post attached to the plate perpendicular thereto and supporting rotatably thereon a locking mechanism for holding the hasp upon the plate.
2. A fastening device comprising a hasp and a plate. for attachment one to a door and the other to its casing, a post attached to the plate perpendicular thereto and a lock rotatably supported upon the post, and means between the lock and plate for holding the hasp in position.
3. A fastening device comprising a hasp and a plate for attachment one to a door and the other to its easing; a p .lostip:3k1;t;e{djin` the plate and a lock slidable an `rotatable upon the plate, and means` between theP ll and plate for holding the hSp in' p'oiftoh; 7
4. A fastening device comprising a hasp and a plate for attachment one' to "oo and the other to its casing, a post suppQntel on the plate and a lock ysli'la'flol'e vand 'iotathle' upon the nest, and meen? 999mb@ .velate for gegilg talfiock-t @le @hast in w pos n. y
' Iiiftimony whereof, I have signed my name atM-l'waliepths 22nd day of Sep tember, 1923.
