DOOR-LOCK.

Be it known that I, RAYMOND G. PATTON, a citizen ofthe UnitedyStates of America, residing at Nelsonville, in the county of Athens and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Door-Locks, of which the following is a specification.

The object of the invention is to provide a supplemental door lock adapted for manipulation only from the inside of a building or apartment, the same being in the nature of a bolt designed to supplement the ordinary locking means for additional security; and in this connection to provide a device for the purpose indicated which can be readily applied to a door without detracting objectionably from the appearance thereof while affording means for holding the door closed even in the event that the ordinary locking device should be forced or manipulated from the outside of the door.

To this end the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the drawing, itbeing understood that changes in form and proportion may be resorted to, within the scope of the claim without departing from the principles involved.

Essentially the device consists of bolt members 10 extended near their remote ends through guides 11 secured as shown, to the door 12 or other closure to be locked, andjerminally engageable with sockets 18 formed in the frame or casing of the closure, the inner or adjacent ends of said bolt members being pivotally connected with a disk 14: revolubly mounted upon a spindle 15 supported by a base plate 16 attached to the door or closure. to facilitate the turning thereof, and carried by the disk is a lock casing 18 having a bolt 19 for engagement with a hasp 20 secured to the base plate. The construction of the lock mechanism may be varied obviously and may involve the necessity, of using a key for the release of the disk, in which event a tumbler 21 having a suitable keyhole 22, may be employed. In any event, however, the disk is provided with a look ing means for securing it in a fixed relation with the base plate to prevent revoluble movement with the consequent operation of the bolt members, so that a separate operation is necessary in order to release the disk to permit of the disengagement of the bolt members from the sockets in the door frame or casing.

When the disk is turned to extend the bolt members into engagement with said sockets it is locked against reverse movement by the engagement of the bolt 19 with a seat provided for its reception in the hasp,-

and the reverse movement necessary to dis engage the remote extremities of the bolt members from said sockets necessitates the manipulation of the lock to withdraw the bolt 19 from engagement with the seat which in effect is formed in or constitutes a part of the stationary base plate.

It will be understood that by arranging this device with the bolt members in substantial alinement vertically in a plane intermediate between the free and hinged edges of the door but preferably nearer to the free edge but set back from the ordinary lock mechanism .23, the forcible opening of the door even in the event that the ordinary lock mechanism should be released or broken will be effectually prevented, whereas when the auxiliary locking device is not needed, its location on the door will not interfere in any way with the usual manipulation thereof, through the means ordinarily provided for that purpose.

In order to provide for an adaptation of the locking mechanism to doors or closures of different dimensions each of the bolt members is preferably made extensible or variable in length, as by providing one of the elements thereof withv a longitudinal slot 2 1 for the reception of a polygonal block 25 on the other element, and securing said elements in the desired relative positions to insure the seating of the terminals thereof in the sockets formed in the frame or casing, by means of bolts 26 or equivalent fastening devices.

Furthermore in order to strengthen the bolt members and means for actuating the same for engaging the remote terminals thereof with sockets in the frame of a clo sure, said means comprising a revoluble disk with which the bolt members have terminally pivoted connections, the disk being formed with rounded seats and the bolt members being formed with rounded terminals, said terminals and seats being concentrio with the pivoted connections for the purpose specified. y
