Description
March 1957 R. G. STALMER PORTABLE DOOR-LOCK Filed June 1, 1954 REGl/VALD 6. STALME R arraeA leu .iull lilt 2,786,705 PORTABLE noon LocK Reginald G." Stalmer, Burbank, c nt, Appligatibn June: 1",; 19.54; SerialNo. 433,416 tcfa m (Cl- .92am
My: present invention; relates. to door looks as for instancez thosento, becauseduby guestsin. hotelsor other transientiestablishments, andit. relates particularly to a portable: doorxlockiwhich .cairbe carried in the pocket of the owner and can be readily applied to the inside of .a: door such as a hotel door in order to prevent hostile entry. F
It is well known-in the art to provide snap locks on the inside of doors but some hotels do not have these snap locks. and some .snap. locks can..be.pried open from. the oiit'sideiby burglers andthe. like.
lfihasilongibeen..acproblemin the. art to provide. the means of locking a hotelroom door from the inside when a particular occupant desires to do so even though the door has not been provided with such locking means by the builder.
It is therefore an object of my present invention to provide a door lock which is portable and can be carried by the owner and which can be inserted on the inside of a door such as a hotel door.
Another object of my present invention is to provide a portable door lock which is inexpensive to make and is light and of small compass to carry.
Another object of my present invention is to provide a portable door lock which can be quickly and easily put into operative position and removed at the will of the owner.
Another object of my present invention is to provide a portable door lock which is positive in action and will prevent entrance by hostile persons.
Other objects and advantages of my present invention will be apparent from the following description and claims, the novelty of my invention consisting in the features of construction, the combinations of parts, the novel relations of the members and the relative proportioning, disposition and operation thereof, all as is more completely described herein, and as is more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of my present specification,
Figure l is an elevational view of the inside of an exterior door to which my invention has been applied.
Figure 2 is a View of the striker plate of such a door with my safety latch inserted.
Figure 3 is similar to Figure 2 with the door closed and my cam swung and rotated into locking position, an intermediate position being shown in outline.
Figure 4 is a horizontal section taken on lines 44 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a section illustrating the pivot connection between my cam member and the hinge plate.
I will now describe the preferred embodiment of my invention, referring to my drawings where I provide a door having the usual lock set 12 and hinges 14.
The usual door jamb 16 and its stop molding 18 is shown, as is an ordinary safety latch 20 and striker plate 22 having a bolt aperture 24.
AS is seen clearly in Figures 2 and 3 I provide a hook 2,786,705 Eatented 1951 support 36; by. meansz-of: screw 4.0 which has a raised:
A hole 44 provided in stationary hinge plate 32- receives rim or raised shoulder 42 around screw: 40 so as to. provide engaging; means-A0 -hbldi movable hinge-plate 36 stationary with respect to hingeplates32*whenihii1ge plates 36'and- 32 arer-in :folded relationship. Figure -5 clearly illustrates: how' raised-u shoulder 42 engages in:
hole 44: in order: to strengthen my. door lock when; hinged' plate members 36? and-32:: are in. their closed position.
Cam 38 has preferably a conical-surface 46 which presents a wedge-like cross-section? and a'fiat surface 48 upon which an operatingl le'ver, 5.0 is-mounted by-means' of pivot 52 so'that lever 50"can rotate about pivot52 intot recess 54- in. order. tohold lever 52 out of 'the way when my portable door lock is; carried in the pocket of" the owner.
Although I show preferably a" hook-30' on.- the engaging end of :my stationary;hingeaplatea'32 toengage bolt aper. t-ure::24*,- any suitable means may;-berprovided foreffect-y ing an engagement between stationary hinge plate 32 and striker plate 22 in the vicinity of bolt aperture 24.
Also my cam 38 may be made of any suitable material and can be made cylindrical as well as conical if it is desired.
I will now describe my preferred method of operating my portable door lock.
When my portable door lock is in my pocket I preferably leave lever 50 folded about its pivot 52 into recess 54 for convenience in carrying. Therefore my first step in operating my portable door lock is to rotate lever 50 about its pivot 52 and pull it out of its recess 54 into the operative position shown in Figure 3 of my drawings.
Then I unfold my hinge plate members disengaging raised shoulder 42 from hole 44 and opening the hinge plate members about their hinge 34 to the position shown in Figure 2 of my drawings.
Then I insert the bend of my stationary hinge plate 32 into operative engagement with striker plate 22 as, for instance, in my preferred embodiment by hooking my book 30 on the inner end of my stationary hinge plate 32 into bolt aperture 24 in striker plate 22 as is seen clearly in Figure 2.
Then I close door 10 leaving my portable door lock extending inwardly in the position shown in Figure 2.
Next I rotate movable hinge plate 36 about its hinge 34 into the closed position shown in Figure 3 so as to engage raised shoulder 42 in hole 44.
As my cam 38 is mounted on an eccentric pin 40 or is mounted eccentrically on pin 40 it is only necessary now to rotate cam 38 about its pin 40, using lever 50 to effect rotation of cam 38 and this causes conical surface 4-6 of cam 38 to rotate into the space between striker plate 22 and door 10.
The conical surface 46 is thus wedged between striker plate 22 and door 10, which effectively locks door 10 against entry by unwanted persons.
My combination includes the new element of my eccentric cam 38 and the new mode of operation of rotating eccentric cam 38 into wedging engagement between striker plate 22 and door 10.
This produces the surprisingly new result of quickly, inexpensively and effectively locking the door against hostile tools in the hands of unwanted persons thus preventing them from entering a hotel room which is equipped with my portable door lock in its operative position.
1 Although my preferred door lock embodies an eccentric cam 38 which is operable by a simple operating handle'50, it is to be understood that any other suitable means may be provided for operating cam 38.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herein shown and described is my preferred embodiment and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention, or the scope of my appended claims.
i I claim:
- 1. A'door lock including a stationary hinge plate operatively engageable with the striker plate of a door frame, a movable hinge plate hingedly connected to said stationary hinge plate, and an eccentric cam member rotatably mounted on said movable hinge plate so as to be rotatable into wedging relationship between said striker plate and said door;
2. A door lock including a stationary hinge plate, a hook on the inner end of said hinge plate operatively engageable with the bolt aperture of the striker plate for a door frame, a movable hinge plate hingedly connected to said stationary hinge plate, separate engaging means between said hinge plate members for stiffening said hinge plate members when said hinge plate members are folded together, an eccentric cam member rotatably mounted on said movable hinge plate so as to be rotatand said door when said hinge plate membersarefolded v together, and means on said cam for rotating it into wedging relationship between said striker plate and said door.
3. A door lock including a pair of folding hinge plates operatively connectable with the striker plate of a door frame, and a cam eccentrically and rotatably mounted on one of said hinge plates, said cam having a tapered peripheral portion which is operatively engageable be tween said door and its striker plate to lock said door against hostile entry.
4. A door lock including a stationary hinge plate operatively engageable with the striker plate of a door frame, a movable hinge plate hingedly connected to said stationary hinge plate, and an eccentric cam member having a conical peripheral portion rotatably mounted on said movable hinge plate, said cam being rotatable into wedging relationship between said striker plate and said door when said hinge plate members are folded together, and said cam being moved out of the way of the door to permit the door to be opened when said hinge plate membets are opened.
