J. KELLY.
TRANSOM LIFTER.
No. 419,681. Patented Jan-.21, 1890.
am %u zm a W 35 1 77117;; 174- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES KELLY, OF SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR OEONE-HALF TO EDWVARD DOUGI-IERTY, OF SAME PLACE.
TRANSOM-LIFTER.
SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 419,681, dated January 21, 1890).
Application filed July 9, 1889. Serial No. 316,965. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES KELLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Diego, in the county of San Diego and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Transom-Lifters; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and
to the letters of reference marked thereon,'
which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to transom-lifters in which the power is applied to the journal of the transom; and it consists in the novel device of a lever attached to the journal and passing through a slot in the casing, which is operated by a connecting-rod, and a sliding rod moving vertically in a guiding face-plate attached to the casing, and which is locked by a set-screw, as more particularly shown in the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters refer to similar parts in the several figures.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a doorframe with transom, showing my invention attached thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view, partly in section, of the transom portion of the frame. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view, partly in section, of the lower portion of the door-frame. Fig. 4 is an enlarged cross-section on the line 0c 00 of Fig. 1.
In the figures, A is the transom, and CL the journals upon which it turns,'o.ne of which is suitably lengthened so as to engage with the operating-lever.
B is the lever, firmly attached to the jour nal in any suitable manner, which passes through the casing and through the slot 0 in the faceplate O, and is attached to the connecting-rod D by the rivet or bolt 7), upon which it moves freely. For the purpose of giving it free play laterally when the device is in operation, the connecting-rod is attached by the joint d to the sliding rod f. At its lower end F the sliding rod is suitably shaped to fit the guiding dovetail e of the faceplate E, in which it moves vertically.
G is a set-screw having a suitable knob, which passes through the rod F and engages with the nut H.
In Figs. 2 and 3 the dotted lines show the position of the parts when the transom is open, A being the transom, B the operating lever, and G the set-screw. V
In operating the device the set-screw is loosened, and the transom is opened or closed by lowering or raising the knob, and is locked in any desired position by tightening the screw. 7
Having described my invention fully, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is r In a transom-lifter, the combination of the elongated transom journal, operating lever passing through the door-jamb, jointed connecting-rod, sliding rod, dovetailed face-plate, and set-screw, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES KELLY.
