TRANSONl-OPENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented oct. 1'7, 1905.
Application led January 28, 1905. Serial No. 243.158.
To @ZZ whom, it may concern;
Beitknown that I. GEORGE CONRAD WEIL, a citizen of' the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Transom-Openers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to adevice for opening, closing, and locking transoms, the object of the invention being to provide a device of this character which shall be cheap, simple, durable and easily operated, and especially one in which the mechanism shall be all or nearly all concealed from view.
The invention resides in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts for the above ends hereinafter fully specified, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a door equipped with my device, parts of the casing being broken away to show the construction. Fig. 2 is a broken perspective view of the device itself detached. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section through the shaft of the device. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section through the clamping-handle. Fig. 5 is a View similar to Fig. 4 of a modification.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a door, 2 the jamb therefor, and 3 the transom, hinged at its loweredge, as shown at 4. In one side of the transom-frame is secured a slotted plate l5, in which slot slides the inwardly-bent end notched at each side, as shown at 6, of a lever-arm 7, extending from the end of a horizontal shaft 8, having its bearing in the door-jamb. On the squared outer end 9 of said shaft 8 is secured the end of the other arm 1() of the lever, which extends rearwardly behind the door-casing 20, slotted as shown at 2l, the outer end of which arm is pivoted to the upper end of a long link 11, which is pivoted at its lower end to a sliding bar 12, passing through a slot 13 in a fixed plate 14 on the casing 20, said bar 12 carrying two washers 15 16, one on each side of said plate 14. Upon the threaded outer end of the bar 12 is screwed a knob 17, and when the bar has been moved up or down in the slotted plate 14 to any desired position it is locked in such position by screwing in the knob, which draws together the two washers 15 16 and clamps them upon the plate 14.
In Fig. 5 is shown a modification in which the transom is mounted upon trunnions 18, one of which extends through the door-jamb inthe same manner as the shaft 8 and carries on its outer end the arm 10, operated in like manner as before.
I claim- In combination with a transom and a doorjamb extending upward by the side ofthe transom, a shaft through said jamb opposite to said transom and operatively connected therewith, a slotted door-casing adjacent to said jamb, an arm extending from the end of said shaft behind said casing, a bar passing through the slot inV the casing, and means connected GEORGE CONRAD WEIL.
