JOHN H. GREEN, OF FREEPORT, OHIO.
WlNDOW-SASH STOP AND FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 230,476, dated July 27, 1880,
Application filed June 12, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. GREEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Freeport, in the county of Harrison and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Sash Stop and Fastener; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled inthe art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which drawings- Figure 1 is perspective view of a section of a window frame and sash with my improvement applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a view of the same partly in section and side view. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of my improvement, showing it adapted for. the right-hand side of the window-frame. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the same, showing it adapted for the left-hand side of the frame; and Fig. 5 is a detailed perspective view of the spring-catch operating device.
This invention appertains to improvements in window-sash stops and fasteners, its object being to effect the stopping and holding of the sash at the desired point and fasten it when lowered or closed; and it consists of a spring catch or pawl and a holding-plate and leaf with slot, combined with an armed shaft having a handle or lever, with one of its arms adapted to act upon and. disengage the spring from the sash, while its other arm serves to hold it in position as against the action of the s rin and further of mechanism for re ulating the tension of the spring or catch, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, A refers to a plate, which is let into a mortise out in the window-frame, and screwed or otherwise secured in place. One end of this plate is curved or turned up and over, as clearly shown at a, while at its sides, near the outer end, it is provided with perforated posts or eyes a a. B is a shorter plate or leaf, with one end pro- .vided on both sides with aflange, b, which fits under the turned-over portion a of the plate A, to detachably connect the leaf B thereto. Having a flange on each side permits the resary to adapt it to the right or left hand side I of the frame. In one side of this leaf or plate is a slot or recess, I), to receive the spring and.
permit of the insertion of its upper end under the leaf, so as to allow the leaf to press upon the spring when under the action of the tension-screw, (presently described,) which serves both to hold the spring in place and adjust the tension thereof.
0 is the tension-adjusting screw, with its outer end projectin gthrough the window-frame facing and through a face-plate, 0, let into the frame, and provided thereat with a knob, c, for conveniently operating it. The screw 0 is provided at its screw-threaded or inner end with a nut, 0 seated in the leaf B, and passes through the plate A and bears in a socket in the frame. By turning the screw in the required direction it will act upon the leaf, and it, in turn, will act upon the spring to increase or lessen its pressure, and thus permit of regulating its tension, as occasion may require.
It is desirable to remove pressure from the catch when not impinging against the sash as a stop-z. 6., when the sash is lowered and the catch is projected into the notch in the sash designed to receive it. It is obvious that this can be accomplished by my improvement.
D is the armed shaft, with its ends bearing and adapted to turn in the perforated posts or eyes a a of the plate A, and provided with two elbow-shaped arms, cl (1, one bearing in the lower end of the spring or catch, while the other arm, cl, bears against the plate A to hold its other arm, d, against the spring. This shaft has a lever or arm, (1 reaching out through the window-frame and the face-plate 0, having a slot to permit of the arm having the desired movement when operated.
It will be observed that by pressing upward on the arm or lever D the catch or spring will be retracted from its notch in the sash, and by pushing in the same direction upon the sash, after which pressure can be removed from the lever or arm, the sash can be raised to the desired point, and will there be held by the action of the spring or catch. It can also be lowered, and, when the hand is removed, be stopped and held by the action of the spring or catch.
E is the spring or catch, which is held, as aforesaid, removably, and can be adapted, the leaf B and armed shaft D being reversible, as is plain from the foregoing, to be applied to the right or left hand side of the windowframe. It is inclined, on the side next to the sash, from its upper to its lowerend outwardly, and turned or extended inwardly at its lower end, forming a beak thereat, as shown, after which it is curved at its inner end, as above described, so as to permit of one arm of the shaft D resting on it.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a sash stop and fastener, the combination of the plate A, having the turnedover end a, the leaf 13, having flange b and side slot or recess, 1), spring- E, and shaft I), having the elbow-shaped arms d d and lever (1 substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a sash stop and fastener, the combination of the plate A, having the turned-over end at, the leaf B, having flange b and the side slot, 0, the adjusting or tension SCIGWMG, the spring E, and shaft D, having the elbowshaped arms d d and arm or lever d substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN HOLLAND GREEN. Witnesses:
H. H. KNOX, M. K. HOWELL.
