To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, Jnssn H, BARTON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brownsville, in the county of Haywood and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and Improved Automatic Sash-Lock, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in sash locks and more par ticularly to an improvement upon the structure illustrated in my Patent No. 879,078 dated February 11, 1908, in that the device is automatic in its operation in engaging and holding the sashes against movement, that is, to prevent the upper sash from being lowered and the lower sash from being raised.
A further and important object of the invention is the provision of an improved automatically actuating sash lock which,
generally speaking, includes means carried by the upper sash and movable therewith to jam against the parting strip of the frame, and a novel spring-actuated engaging member carried by the top of the lower sash to cooperate with the first mentioned means to prevent opening of the sashes in the manner heretofore specified, unscrupulously or otherwise, from the exterior or outside whether the sashes are closed or partly open and in such a manner that the sashes can be held in different adjusted positions or open at varying degrees, as for instance, for ventilating purposes, while means are also provided so that the possibility of releasing the sash look by a wire or other instrument passed between the sashes is obviated.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention resides in the peculiar combination and arrangement of partsto be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated and claimed, it being also an object to provide a device which is simple in construction, durable and efficient in operation and not likely to get out of order.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 is a horizintal sectional view of a window frame having sashes movable therein and equipped with my improved sash lock, the section being taken on the line 1---1 of Fig. 2; Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary inside elevation of portions of the frame and window sashes equipped with the improvement; Fig. 4 is a reverse view of that shown in Fig. 3, with a portion of the handle or lever removed; and Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 55 of Fig. 4C.
In illustrating the application of the invention there is shown a window frame having sashes slidable therein, the frame for this purpose being provided with outer beading strips 11, parting strips 12 and removable inner beading strips 13 providing guideways 14 and 15 in which the upper and lower sashes 16 and 17 are respectively vertically slidable. The parting strips 12 thus separate the upper and lower sashes and a rod 18 is fastened vertically to one side of the upper sash in any suitable way such as by means of staple ends 19 directed at right angles to the length of the rod which is illustrated as provided with serrations 20 on its inner face substantially throughout its length. This rod is fastened to the sash 16 after the same is pressed as far to the opposite side as is possible without interfering with the free movement of the sash, so that the rod will jam or engage against the adjacent parting strip at the inner edge of the latter. The other part of the sash lock which coiiperates with the serrated rod or bar comprises an angular bracket 21 which is secured to the top of the lower sash at one side by suitable fastening devices which may be in the form of wood screws 22, and said bracket is provided with a vertical bearing support 23 at its outer end terminating in a sleeve extending half way across the Width of the bracket and reinforced by a central web 24 to add strength thereto. A cam in the form of a circular cap-like shell 25 is pivotally mounted eccentrically in the sleeve of the support 23, the pivot 26 thereof being engaged through the sleeve and held against rotation by suitable anchoring means which may take the form of a cross pin 27 passing through the sleeve and pivot.
The shell or hollowed-out circular member forming the cam or eccentric is provided on its outer edge with serrations or corrugations 28 disposed transversely thereof to cooperate with the serrations of the rod The outer end of the pivot is headed as shown at 29 and transversely grooved as shown at 30 to receive one end of an expansible coiled spring 31 which encircles the head of the pivot within the shell and has said end anchored to the pivot by upsetting the latter at either side of the groove 30 as shown at 82, while the other end is anchored in an apertured ear 88 stamped out of and bent in from the face portion of the cam diametrically opposite to the center thereof with respect to the disposition of the pivot 26. Inthis manner the end of the spring attached to the pivot is held against movement so'that expansion of the spring results in the rotation of the cam on its pivot in a clockwise direction or .in a direction toward the rod turning downward, whereby the serrated portion of the cam will be caused to engage the serrations of the rod and thus hold the sashes in any adjusted positions vertically due to the frictional engagement and co-action between the serrated faces.
Should an attempt be made to lower the upper sash when it is entirely closed or partly lowered, the cam, by reason of its engagement with the rod as downward pressure isexerted upon the lattersowing to it being carriedbythe upper sash, will be turned on its pivot in a clock-wise direction and cause the point of greatest eccentricity thereof to bind against the rod and parting strip with greater pressure than exerted by the spring, and thus prevent the upper sash from being lowered. An attempt to raise the lower sash when the same is entirely closed or slightly raised will similarly result in the turning-of the cam to frictionally engagej with the rod and causethe rod to be jammed against the parting strip whereby raising ofthe lower sash is also prevented and thus the upper and lower sashes may be sufficiently lowered and raised respectively so as to allow ventilation without endangering the safety of the occupants of a room or house. However, the upper and lower sashes may be readily raised and lowered, respectively, for closing the same from the inside or outside so that as it is impossible to open the sashes from the outside, an attempt to raise both of the sashes wouldresult in the closing of the top sash but it will be impossible to raise the lower sash. Should an attempt be made to lower both sashes the lower sash would then be closed and it would be impossible to lower the upper sash so that both would be closed and the locking means would be inaccessible.
In order to permit convenient releasing ofthe cam or look, a handle or lever 3a is removably attached to the cam and for this purpose the lever is provided with a curved endportion 35 to fit around the bearing sleeve receiving the pivot, and the inner end of the lever is directed laterally as shown at 36 to provide a lug which extends through a slot 37 in the face portion of the cam or eccentrically mounted disk. The lever is further provided with a pin 38 projecting laterally therefrom in the same direction of extent as the lug 36 to engage a perforation or opening 39 through the cam or disk. The free end of the lever is apertured as shown at 40 to permit the attachment of a pull cord or chain for conveniently operating the lever to release the look if necessary or desired, although ordinarily this will not be needed. hen the lever is attached to the cam in the manner described it is held from displacement by a pivoted button 4.1 which is offset to extend over the lever and which can be turned out of the path of the lever in order to permit the latter to be displaced when the window is locked. The advantage of this is that when the sashes are both open or when the upper sash is slightly lowered, any attempt to insert a wire or instrument between the sashes or under the lower sash to engage the lever for releasing the look by pulling downwardly thereon, will be obviated owing to the fact that it will be impossible to catch hold of the cam with the lever removed. In addition, the lock will jam both of the sashes against the window frame opposite the side to which the lock is disposed to hold them tight and the releasing of the lock will permit the sashes to be operated. This is due to the fact that the lock will prevent the window from rattling and therefore will serve the additional function and prevent the entrance of cold air into the room or rooms in the winter. It will thus be seen that an attempt to enter from the outside will result in the closing of the window and should an unscrupulous intruder cut the glass in order to operate the lock it will be impossible to raise the sash because as fast as the lock is displaced it will at once move into locked position automatically. Ordinarily it would be unnecessary to remove the lever owing to the great distance between the top and bottom portions of the sashes.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In combination with an upper and lower window sash separated by a parting bead, a sash lock comprising a bracket secured to the top of the lower sash, a cam journaled on the bracket, a rod attached to the upper sash and between the cam and the parting bead, means for normally holding the cam in engagement with the rod and a lever for operating the cam to release the same from the rod and remove the binding engagement of the latter with the parting bead.
2. In combination with an upper and lower window sash separated by a parting bead, a sash lock comprising a bracket secured to the top of the lower sash, a cam ISO 1,1ae,a17 111 journaled on the bracket, a rod attached to the upper sash and between the cam and the parting bead, and means for normally holdingthe cam in engagement with the rod.
3. In combination with a window frame having sashes slidable therein, a device carried by one of said sashes to bind against the frame and means carried by the other sash for binding said device against said frame to hold the same, whereby both of said sashes are frictionally locked within the frame, said means being normally held in looking position.
4. In combination with a window frame having sashes slidable therein, a serrated rod carried by one of the sashes and spring actuated means carried by the other sash for binding against said rod to cause frictional engagement of the latter with the frame whereby both of said sashes are frictionally locked within the frame.
5. In combination with a window frame having sashes slidable therein, a serrated rod carried by one of the sashes, spring actuated means carried by the other sash for binding against the rod to cause frictional engagement of the latter with the frame whereby both of said sashes are frictionally located within the frame and permitted to be closed without initially or independently releasing said spring actuated means and means for operating said spring actuated means to release the same and permit opening of the sashes.
6. In combination with a frame having sashes slidable therein, a cam carried by one sash, means carried by the other sash arranged between the cam and window frame, means for revolving the cam to bind said first-named means to the frame and normally holding said sashes locked and means for turning the cam in the opposite direction to release the same.
7. In combination with a frame having sashes slidable therein, a cam carried by one sash, means carried by the other sash arranged between the cam and window frame, means for revolving the cam to bind said first-named means to the frame and normally holding said sashes locked and a lever removably connected to the cam to release the same, said cam comprising an eccentrically mounted shell inclosing said secondnamed means which normally holds the cam in looking position.
8. In combination with upper and lower window sashes operable in a frame and separated by a parting strip; a serrated rod attached to and projecting from the upper sash at one side to jam against the parting strip and hold the sash displaced toward the opposite side of the frame, and means carried by the top of the lower sash normally cooperative with said rod to hold the sashes against opening movement but adapted to permit the same to be freely closed without manually releasing said means.
9. In combination with upper and lower window sashes operable in a frame and separated by a parting strip; a serrated rod attached to and projecting from the upper sash at one side to jam against the parting strip and hold the sash displaced toward the opposite side of the frame, a bracket secured to the top of the other sash at the side adjacent to the rod and having a sleeve portion, a headed pivot removably held in said sleeve portion, a shell-like disk eccentrically mounted on the pivot, an expansible coiled spring anchored to the pivot head and to the disk within the latter and normally holding the point of greatest eccentricity of the disk in engagement with the rod, the edge of the disk at said point being transversely corrugated and a handle attached to the disk for disengaging the same from the rod, the disk when in engagement with the rod serving to jam the latter against the parting strip whereby an attempt to open the sashes will result in the tightening of the disk against the rod and further jamming of the latter with the parting strip to prevent opening of the sashes while permitting the closing thereof against the action of the spring.
10. In combination with upper and lower window sashes operable in a frame and separated by a parting strip; a rod attached to and projecting from the upper sash at one side to jam against the parting strip and hold the sash displaced toward the opposite side of the frame, a bracket attached to the top of the lower sash at the side adjacent to the rod and having a reinforced vertical portion, a pivot carried by the portion, a disk eccentrically mounted on the pivot, spring means to normally cause the disk to bindingly engage with the rod in a downward direction to lock the sashes against opening movement and a handle removably attached to the disk for releasing the disk against the action of the spring to permit opening of the sashes.
11. In combination with upper and lower window sashes operable in a frame and separated by a parting strip; a serrated rod attached to and projecting from the upper sash at one side to jam against the parting strip and hold the sash displaced toward the opposite side of the frame, a bracket attached to the top of the lower sash at the side adjacent to the rod and having a reinforced vertical portion, a pivot carried by said portion, a disk eccentrically mounted on the pivot, spring means between the pivot and the disk to normally cause the disk to bindingly engage with the rod in a downward direction to lock the sashes against opening movement, a handle for releasing the disk against the action of the spring to permit opening of the sashes, said In testimony whereof I have signed my handle being removable, and means carried name to this specification in the presence of by the disk to hold the handle from distWo subscribing Witnesses. placement outwardly from the disk or per- JESSE H.
