Description

UNITED STATES PATENT Orricn.
ALLISON MONROE ROSCOE, OF DU BOIS, FA., 'ASSIGNOR OF TNOTHIRDS TO GEORGE D. HAMOR AND EMANUEL KUNTZ, BOTH OF SAlvlE PLACE.
SASH-FASTENER.
SE ZECII-ICATIOH forming part of Letters Patent No. 339,324, dated April 6, 1886.
Application filed January '2', 1886.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALLISON MONROE Ros- COE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Du Bois, in the county of Olearfield and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Fastenings; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
M y invention relates to sash-holders, and particularly to that class in which the sashes are adjusted independently of each other, and held in position by a rod ailixed to one sash passing through a keeper on the other sash.
It consists in combining with the rod hav ingalongitudinal serrated and smooth portion, a keeper having a corresponding serrated portion to engage the broken or roughened per tion of the rod, a spring to normally keep the serrations of the rod and keeper out or" con tact, and means to overcome the tension of the spring and bring the parts in contact to hold the sash or sashes in any desired position.
It also consists in novel features, more fully shown and hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a front view of a window 1" rame and sashes provided with my improved holding devices. on the line a: so of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a top View of the lower sash, showing the keeper in position and the rod in section. Fig. 4 is a section on the line y 3 of Fig. 3, with portions of the sash broken away.
The frame A and sashes B and C are of ordinary construction and design, and are simply shown to illustrate the application of my improved devices.
Depending from the frame is a loop, a, located beyond the plane of the lower sash. A
bar, D, having its upper end bent at right air gles and secured to the upper rail of the sash B, extends downward and passes through a keeper, E, fixed to the upper rail of the sash C. A longitudinal portion, (1, of the bar D is is serrated, and the remaining longitudinal portion, d, is smooth.
That portion of the Fig. 2 is a section 4 Serial No. 187,908. (No model.)
keeper adjacent to the serrations d is correspondingly serrated, as shown at e, and is of a width equal to the roughened portion of the bar, leaving a space, 6, opposite the smooth portion of the bar, within which is located the free end of a spring, F, the other end of the spring being attached to the base-plate E of the keeper. The distance between the serrated portion 6 of the keeper and its outer wall is sufficient to permit the passage of the bar D, and the free end of the spring F, bearing upon the smooth portion cl, serves to hold the serrated portion of the rod out of contact with the part 6. A set-screw, G, passing through the front wall of the keeper, bears upon the rod, and in the operation of the one sash over the other when raising or lowering for ventilation it may be held in the required position by turning the screw, when the bar will be forced inward against the tension of the spring, and the roughened portions c and d. of the keeper and bar, respectively, will in terlock, thus securing a positive binding between the two sashes. A reverse movement 7 of the setscrew will permit the action of the spring and a consequent disengagement of the bar and keeper, as is manifest.
The lower end of the bar has an opening, it, formed therein, to engage a hook, H, on the 30 sash 0. Thus when the upper sash is secured at its highest position, or nearly so, andthe lower sash is raised, the hook H, engaging the opening, will hold the sash in its elevated position. This is an important feature, as it al- 83 ways affords a ready means for holding the lower sash in an adjusted position when the set-screw of the keeper is not within easy reach. There may be as many of these openings as desired, and the hook may be located at any convenient position.
A rod, 1, is secured to the bar D in such a manner as to have a partial rotary movement, but fixed relative to an independent longitudina-l movement. The upper and lower ends of 5 the rod are bent at right angles, and the upper end is adapted to engage the loop a and hold the upper sash in its highest position. A partial rotary movement of the rod will disengage its end from the loop and permit the adjustmo ment of the sash. The rod passes through an independent opening, in the keeper.
It will be seen that either sash may be moved over the other. It is evident that the keeper may be attached to the upper sash and the bar to the lower one Without departing from the spirit of my invention.
It may be found expedient to dispense with the spring, in which case the bar. may be held out of engagement with the keeper by hand when operating the sash, or sufficient elasticity may be given to the bar itself'to accomplish the same purpose.
The serrated part 6 of the keeper may be integral therewith. or it may be a separate block or plate inserted therein.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. The combination of a sliding sash, a bar having a longitudinal serrated portion and a longitudinal smooth portion. a keeper having corresponding serrated and smooth portions, a spring fastened to the keeper and bearing on the smooth portion of the bar to keep the serrations of the bar and keeper normally out er being sufficient to permit the disengagement of the serrated parts of the bar and keeper, substantially, as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The combination of the upper and lower sash, a bar secured to theupper sash, a keeper fastened to the'lower sash to engage the bar, and hooks attached to the lower sash to engage perforations in the bar when the keeper is not in convenient reach, substantially as set forth. In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
