UNrrsD STATES ATENT Gratos.;
LOUIS M. FROBERG, OF NEW-YORK, N. Y.
SHUTTER-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 491,165, dated February 7, 1893.
Application led October 17. 1892. Serial No. 449,083. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS M. FROBERG, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York, State of New York, have invented certainv new and useful Improvements in Door and Vindow Fastenings; and I do herebydeclare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to whichit appertains to make and use'the same.
My invention relates to improvements in door and window fastenings.
The invention will first be described in connection with the accompanying drawings, and then pointed out in the claim. Y v
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved fastening device as applied to a window, the window being adapted to swing inwardly. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional View of my improved apparatus.
Referring to the drawings, A is a rod, journaled in bearings B attached to the right hand window Q, as shown. To each end of rod A above and below the window, is secured, by means of set screw l, a crank-piece 2 having a hooked end 3, beveled as shown in Fig. 2. These crank-pieces 2 are adapted to enter slots 4; in catch plates D secured to the window-frame above and below the window, recesses 5 being cut in said window frame to allow the hooked-ends 3 to project through the slots 4 and engage the edges 6 of the plates D, which are beveled to correspond with the bevel of the hooked-ends 3.
Rod A is enlarged near its central portion, as shown at 7, to form a bearing for a spring arm 8 which 'passes through a slot 9 in the enlarged portion and is pivoted on a screw l0, being provided with a curved portion 1l, and a knob 12 at its end. Y
E is a catch secured to the left hand window as is shown and adapted to engage with the spring arm 8,' the latter having sufficient movement on the pivot lO to permit it to be swung above the hooked-end 13 of the catch E.
The operation of my apparatus is so obvious as to need no description.
By bevelin g the two edges 3 and 6 a slight Variation in the thickness of the window C will not affect the locking of the crank pieces 2 to the Acatch plates D and by securing the crank-pieces 2 to the rod A, by the set screws l an adjustment of the crank-pieces with relation to the spring arm 8 is permissible, thereby adjusting the amount of strain on the spring arm. The curved portion 1l of the latter is for the purpose of allowing a molding or weather strip F to be secured to the edge of the right hand window.
-It is obvious with my apparatus the door or Window is held not only at its middle portion by the catch E and springarm 8 but also at both top and bottom, thereby securely holding the door to its place andpreventing it from warping or dishing as in the ordinary method of fastening. o
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is l A fastener for folding doors, windows and the like, consisting of a rod, journaled in bearings adapted to be secured to one of the folding parts and having its ends adapted to project beyond the part to which it is secured and provided with projecting hooks adapted to engage recesses formed in the window frames, said shaft having an enlargement formed substantially midway its length, said enlargement having a slot formed in it at one side and an opening in its side opposite said slot; a bent spring arm, pivoted in said opening and projecting through said slot in the opposite side o-f said enlargement; the free end of said arm projecting beyond the edge of said folding part to which the rod is secured and being adapted to engage a catch plate secured to the other folding part, substantially as set forth'.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
