W. H. GRUBB. ADJUSTABLE HINGED WINDOW 0R DOOR SCREEN.
Patented-Nov. 18,1890.
R Z W UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
"WILLIAM H. GRUBB, OF QUINOY,ILLINOIS, ASSIGNQR OF ONE-HALF TO J.
M. LIONBERGER, OF SAME PLACE.
ADJUSTABLE HINGED WINDOW OR DOOR SCREEN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 441,096, dated November 18, 1890.
Application filed July 18, 1890. Serial No. 359,170. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. GRUBB, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Quincy, in the county of Adams and State of Illinois, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Hinged Window and Door Screens; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective inside view of the window and screen. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section, and Fig. 3 is a detail view of the latch.
This invention relates to certain improvements in window-screens, having for its object to effect the ready putting in place and removal of the screen; and it consists in the construction and combination of parts as hereinafter disclosed.
In the drawings, Arefers to the screen, the frame a of which is made in sections A A hinged together, as at b.
B is a spring-metal plate or latch pivoted at one end to the frame-section A on the side opposite that to which the hinges are attached, the frame thus being adapted to be fixed against the action of said spring, the purpose of which will appear farther on.
The plate or latch B is provided in one end portion with an approximately L-shaped slot 0, engaging a headed stud or screw cl, projecting from the frame-section A; also, at the same end the latch is provided with an operating finger-piece or stud e.
' It will be seen that in order to put the screen in place in the window it is only necessary to move the latch so as to disengage the short arm of the slot from the stud d and to flex or bow the frame with its attached wire-cloth, thus bringing it within the limits of the opening of the window-frame and permitting its insertion therein. The spring or recoil of the metal of the latch thus flexed with the flexing or bowing of the screen will have the effect to automatically restore thelatter to its original or normal position. Now, by reversing the movement of the latch the short arm ofv its slot will again engage the stud d and lock the screen-frame sections in position, preventing their deflection and consequently the removal of the screen from the outside.
In like manner, as in manipulating the screen for insertion into the Window-frame, the screen is adapted to be removed therefrom.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat'- ent, IS-1" The window-screen having its frame made of hinged-together sections and the springmetal latch or plate connected to one framesection and having an approximately L- shaped slot engaging a stud on the other frame-section, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
\VILLIAM H. GRUBB.
