HENRY GRIMSHAW, OF ELBOY, WISCONSIN.
WlNDOW SCREEN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 267,519, dated November 14., 1882.
Application filed March 15, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY GRIMSHAW, of Elroy, in the county of Juneau and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Window-Screens, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to a screen to be employed for the purpose of preventing the entrance of insects through an open window.
The invention consists in the combination, with a frame carrying a wire-nettin g screen, of an auxiliary frame, consisting of adjustable bars provided with transverse slots, and a series of corner-plates provided with slots at right angles to each other, whereby provision is made for adjusting the screen to windows of different sizes, as hereinafter more particularly described.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a face view of a screen embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section taken in the line or m of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse horizontal section taken in the line y y of Fig. 1.
The wire cloth or netting A is attached to a rigid frame, B, of a size nearly approximating to that of an ordinary window. To this frame B is connected an auxiliary frame composed of bars D, lying against the bars which compose the frame B. At each corner of this auxiliary frame is a metallic plate, E, having two of its edges turned downward and attached to one of the bars D. The width of the plate corresponds with the width of the bar, and its length is about double the width. Each plate E is provided with a transverse slot, 6, and a longitudinal slot, f, and each bar D has a transverse slot, d, midway of its length, and also has slots corresponding with those in the plate. The length of each slot is about equal to half the width of the bar D. Screws Gpass through these slots and into the bars of the frame B. The plate E at one end of each 'frame larger.
bar is arranged with its length parallel with the length of the bar, and at the other end it is transverse thereto. By this means the auxiliary frame D is connected to the rigid frame B, and may be adjusted so as to make it wider and longer. The transverse slots at and e in one bar and plate and the longitudinal slotf I in theadjoining bar and plate allow each bar D to be moved laterally, so as to make the If desired, some of the screws G may be tightened, was to hold the bars in position when adjusted.
In order to provide for opening and closing the window-shutters without removing the frame from the window, a door, H, sutficiently large to admit the hand, is provided in the the screen A at such a point as to enable the hand to reach the shutter-fastenings.
The advantages of my invention are: It is cheap and simple in construction, readily adjusted to fit windows of different sizes, strong and durable, and not liable to get out of order,
and by means of the door access may be had j".
to the shutters without removing the screen.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1 In a window-screen, the combination, with a rigid frame carrying a wire-netting, of an auxiliary frame, consisting of bars provided with transverse slots, and corner-plates having slots at right angles to each other, adjustably secured to the said rigid frame by screws, substantially as herein described.
2. In a window-screen, the combination, with a rigid frame, B, carrying a wire-netting, A, of the adjustable bars D and corner-plates E, provided with slots d e f, and the screws G, passing through said slots and into said rigid frame, substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
HENRY GRIMSHAW.
